There can't without a physical body.

At first I was thinking mental torment but that would require a physical brain.
So unless "God" plans to recreate a physical body for us, God is out of luck if they plan on doing any tormenting after we die.

And even if he does create a physical body - I'm not sure how that torment can be eternal. Either we would get accustomed to it, and it wouldn't be torment at all, or the torment would go too far and we would basically "die" again.

Mmm, and then be made again, and then die .. ad infinitum.

I find myself alive and aware now, I have no reason to think that it cannot happen again.
I do not know where "I" came from or where I am going to.
These things are hidden from me.
The passing of time is a perception .. a perception while we are trapped in this space-time continuum.

It is the soul that suffers, not the body, but I don't believe that anyone is cast into hell.
I believe people send themselves to hell by virtue of their own actions and beliefs.

You never heard of the torment of the soul? Physical suffering is only one kind of suffering, there is also mental anguish. The soul is associated with the mind while we live in a physical body, but after the physical body dies, the soul becomes associated with a spiritual body and continues its life as before, with full consciousness, since it is the soul that is responsible for consciousness.

Intelligence doesn't require a brain. And yes it's spiritual/mental torment. A brain only transceives. It doesn't create intelligence or consciousness

"Torment" is defined as severe physical or mental suffering.
The soul and mind can still exist after the body has been destroyed.

There is a period of decay. Is a brain/heart that is no longer living still a brain/heart or just a leftover set of physical elements left to decompose when we die...

I don't believe consciousness can exist without a physical brain.
It maybe a hopeful belief but there is no evidence/reason to believe such is possible.

You are free to believe anything that can't be falsified of course but it seems pointless to me since what can be believed is endless possibilities without something other than hope to support it.

Yes, I suspect any torment that maybe experienced will be self induced.
I wonder if God can torment me if I choose not to be tormented.

Why should I believe anything about which I have no experience with?
We humans are very ignorant about that which lies beyond our experience.

I have believed many things which have turned out to be wrong.
Belief is not a good indication of what is true.

I am not saying that you should believe there is an afterlife unless you have a 'reason' to believe it

You are not going to have any direct 'experience' with the afterlife until you die and experience it, so if you want to wait till then that is your choice.
