To be or not to be a Christian… for the day of thanksgiving. that is the question.

Well I’m not sure what I believe, but tomorrow for thanksgiving when I’m with the family I must have an answer, if the topic comes up. “I don’t know” or “I have no previous experience which allows me to make an educated assertion on the matter of God” will be taken the wrong way. If I say that that means I’m going to hell, in my family’s eyes.

Me and my partner were talking about whether we should act like Christians tomorrow to simplify things. What do you think?

    Sounds awfully complicated.

Why not just listen without commentary?

What would 'act like Christians' look like?

There's little harm in dissimulation to avoid unnecessary conflict, but some people find it easier to be true to themselves.

I wouldn't find fault with you either way.

    In my opinion.

When Jesus landed on Plymouth Rock and invited the Native Americans to the Last Supper. Duh!

Honesty is supposed to be the best policy.
I don't suppose they will shun you or kick you out.

Sometimes it is hard to avoid the two topics one is supposed to avoid. Oddly enough my family has no problem. We are lucky when it comes to politics. Even the conservative members could see that Trump was a disaster. But today I am cooking the turkey at my Seventh Day Adventist brother's place for Thanksgiving dinner.

Why not? It's common talk at every other venue in the US.

Are they going to ask you if you're a Christian?? If you bow your head while someone rambles on, you're just being polite, but if you are point blank asked, tell the truth.

Sadly, it's a loaded subject that can cause family turmoil. It, like religion, should just be a simple topic.

I think it depends on the family.

My family is Christian (in fact, my ex’s husband is a pastor). They know I’m Hindu.

Aside from the ex’s husband leading a pre-meal prayer, there isn’t much discussion about religion outside the norm.

In france the taboo topic at table is work which can lead to raised voices if anyone brings it up. I thought maybe something as volatile as religion in the US may be something to avoid over dinner

I would just say I'm not going to talk about it with them. And every time they try, I would repeat it. Sooner or later they'll get tired of trying. And they're going to think whatever they want about you, anyway.

I remember hearing this. The question is why does that cause such a reaction?

    In the USA I didn't do T day because I don't
want to see a big dead animal on the table.

Christmas is fine though. We make a
big ( non christian) deal of it here.
