I thought I'd post this just to share an observation noted by our cantorial soloist as part of a dvar torah.

Many here will be at least somewhat familiar with torah trope with common groups such as:

{ mercha ... tipcha ... mercha ... sof-pasuk } and { mercha ... tipcha ... sof-pasuk }

These musical groups seem to have a natural beginning and ending; one can imagine humming them.

This brings us to b'rei**** which begins, not with mercha, but with tipcha. It's almost as if it begins in the middle with no reference to what came before. As such, it mimics the distinction between the current 'Jewish' translation and standard 'Christian' one.

Neat.
