so what is self in that infinity? a form? an action?

a wave upon the shore, then suddenly pulled back into the fray?

a smell, a word, a touch, a picture and suddenly i remember something not known for years. and I'm there in that instance. connecting to the past as if time didn't even exist.

    a call across the ages

a loved one lives there now. she doesn't even know herself now as much as she did then. she lives in another time and place. dementia hasn't taken all of her awareness yet. the past and present doesn't really matter for her, she still recognizes and loves her children.

    love leaves a deep impression.

I vote neither. In that infinity, self is volition.
I tend to envision it as a 'who' or a 'what' in the waves, not the wave itself.
    It's bitter-sweet, isn't it?
"the past and present doesn't really matter for her" How do you know? I'm not an expert, but, dementia patients often get stuck in their past memories. Perhaps this isn't applicable to your loved one. But I would expect that the past still matters a great deal to them. But you would know better than me.
    yes.

but isn't the will, the spirit, nothing more than the mind making up itself?

I tend to envision it as a 'who' or a 'what' in the waves, not the wave itself.

like dark chocolate but this too will pass.

she moves back and forth in time like an entangled proton. neither here nor there but both.

It's more than that, of course :) It describes what the self will do.
