Three Days and Three Nights

Perhaps a further wording of the OP may make it more clear:

1. The Messiah said that He would be three days and three nights in the "heart of the earth"

2. There are those who think that the crucifixion took place on the 6th day of the week with the resurrection taking place on the 1st day of the week.

3. Of those, there are some who think that the "heart of the earth" is referring to the tomb.

4. A 6th day of the week crucifixion/1st day of the week resurrection allows for only 2 nights to be involved.

5. To account for the lack of a 3rd night, some of those mentioned above say that the Messiah was employing common figure of speech/colloquial language.

6. I wonder if anyone who falls in that group of believers might provide examples to support that belief; i.e., instances where a daytime or a night time was forecast or said to be involved with an event when no part of the daytime and/or no part of the night time could have occurred.

Whenever the three days and three nights of Matthew 12:40 is brought up in a "discussion" with 6th day crucifixion folks, they frequently argue that it is a Jewish idiom for counting any part of a day as a whole day. I wonder if anyone has documentation that shows that the phrase "x" days and "x"nights was ever used in the first century or before when it didn’t include at least parts of the "x" days and at least parts of the "x" nights?
Good point. It seems to be an idiom because it is used freely as if it were.

It's nearly impossible to have a time period of 3 days and 3 nights. You would have to begin exactly at the start of the first day and end exactly at the end of the third night. Anything other than this would be less than 3 days and 3 nights.

And the time in the tomb after the crucifixion of Jesus is rather odd. It is only 30 minutes of one day plus 1 day and 2 nights plus 10 minutes of one day. Weird to call it 3 days and 3 nights when its closer to 2 days and 2 nights.

Jesus was born 9-22-4 BC and died 4-25-31 AD and will return,
most likely on 9-18-2031 AD.
9-18-2031?

If that's true we need to get rid of much of Matthew chapter 24 (specifically 24:36) and Mark chapter 13 (specifically 13:32). Also need to delete the first few verses of 1 Thess chapter 5. While we're at it, let's get rid of John 3:16 also. It's just the words of God. He didn't always know what he was talking about. People are much smarter than God.

Since it's again been awhile, someone new visiting this site may know of examples.

You must first ask yourself, what is a day and a night? To the Jews in those days, a day began when the sunset, then there was a period of darkness followed by an equal period of Light.

In the North pole we have a six month periods of night followed by a six month period of Light. On Mercury, Venus, Earth , Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, Each night is followed by an equal period of light. On the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover, God created an extra day, of three hours of darkness from 12 PM to 3 PM, and the following three hours of light from 3 PM to 6 PM.

Jesus said, "A Day has 12 hours has it not, etc.

Jesus was dead for that first period of light, of Thursday, that first day, [Day one] he remained dead, Friday night [Night one] and Friday, the Most Holy of Sabbaths, the day of Passover, [Day two], Saturday night, [Night two] and Saturday, the normal weekly Sabbath [Day three], and Sunday night [Night three].

For darkness to have covered Jerusalem for a period of three hours, and knowing that the longest eclipse of the sun is no more that about seven minutes, there had to be an incoming heavenly object that remained between the sun and the city for three hours, and the supposed earthquake, could have been a Tunguska-like fireball that exploded over the desert wasteland east of the Jordan, rocking the mountains and shaking the Temple so violently that the curtain in front of the Holy of Holies tore from the top to the bottom.

So you are saying Jesus died on Thursday instead of Friday as most people believe?

Correct! The Jews had incorporated, the Day of Passover, which was to be a religious celebration held separate from the seven day festival of Unleavened Bread, into one festival, which they called the Passover, which lasted for seven days.

Jesus held the Passover on the correct evening, symbolically offering his own body in the form of Bread and wine in place of the Pascal Lambs, which the Jews Killed on the same day as they murdered Jesus, which was the day of preparation to their Passover, which was in fact the first day of the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread.

Very interesting idea. I would like to know more. What time of day on Thursday did He die and when did He rise from the grave? Does it add up to 72 hours which would seem to be what three days and three nightts would be.

Nope! Not 72 hours, but three days and three nights. The Jewish day begins at sunset, and a Day is a period of Darkness followed by an equal period of Light, as revealed in a previous post of mine in this thread in this page.

A normal day to the Jews would be 12 hours of darkness followed by 12 hours of Light.

Jesus held his one day Passover celebration with his disciples in accordance with the times stipulated in the Torah, the one day celebration of Passover which day was followed by the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread, but which was in the evening/beginning of the day of preparation to the Jewish seven day festival, as they had incorporated the one day Passover Festival into the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread, eating their Passover meal in the evening of the 15th day of the first month, instead of the 14th day.

He was sentenced to death on the 6th hour of the 12 hours of darkness [Midnight] on the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover. He was nailed to the cross on the third hour of daylight, 9 AM on the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover, Darkness covered the city of Jerusalem from the 6 th hour of the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover [Midday] till the 9th hour [3 PM] when Jesus gave up the spirit and the three hours of light that followed the three hours of Darkness returned to the city.

His lifeless body was buried just as the sun was setting on the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover and the beginning of their most Holy Sabbath wherein the evening and beginning of that Great Sabbath that preceded to normal weekly Sabbath, the Jews were sitting down to eat their Pascal Lambs which had been killed between the two evenings.

The three hours of light that had followed the three hours of darkness being the first day, Friday night, the first night, Friday the second day, Saturday night, the second night, Saturday, the third day, Sunday night, the third night. Three days and three nights.

1 Peter 3: 19; Before his lifeless body was buried, Jesus was already in the bowels of the earth having descended to the days of Noah, where he preached the Good News also to those who were disobedient when Noah was building the ark.

The Anointed,
re: "... all my responses are on the topic of three days and three nights."

The topic title was poorly conceived with regard to the intent of the topic. Unfortunately the title and OP couldn't be edited by the time I realized the need for the editing. However, they were clarified in a number of subsequent posts, most recently in post #162. Again, the topic question is with regard to the commonality of forecasting a daytime or a night time when no part of a daytime or no part of a night time could occur. So far no one has provided any examples. For the purpose of this topic, that is the only thing of concern.

Na, the Lord Jesus started His descent into the heart of the earth the evening He was taken into custody. From Heaven to were He was going was through man or the act was none effective. There were many instances in the Gospel where they wanted to kill him stone Him make Him king and take Him into custody. But via the proper authorities in the nation that He made starting with Abraham for this very purpose, is the first of three nights or in this case the evening of Friday. And yes its understood that any part of a thing is a thing. Such as day and evening. Even in the arguments of parts of God its understood scripturally as God, such as His Word or His Spirit.

But it seems like Jesus was not in the tomb during the three hours of light on Thursday. So the only periods of light when He was in the tomb would be Friday and Saturday. He said He would be "in the heart of the earth" for three days and three nights not just that He would be dead. I think this idea is worth investigating but a few details need to be cleared up.

That's an issue for a different topic. Please see post #162 and post #176.
