This is an experiment that I think might be worth trying. Whether it will take off, I don't know, but let's try it and see.

On an ongoing basis, I'm going to try to compile a list of religious festivals, celebrations and holidays for the upcoming week. Hopefully this will give people an excuse to ask people here in those religions about them and what they mean to them, their community, and their faith... and in the process gain a bit of understanding of other people, religions and cultures.

Here goes... if I miss an event in your religion (or if my description is incorrect or inadequate), feel free to post here as well.

June 15 to 21, 2008

June 15 - Pentecost (Christian - Orthodox)
In most forms of Christianity, Pentecost is traditionally considered to be the date on which the Holy Spirit descended into the Christian Church. The celebration is closely tied to the Jewish holiday Shavuot (both historically and symbolically). The date of Pentecost is dependent on the date of Easter.

June 16 - Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev (Sikh)
According to Wiki (I have to admit that my knowledge of the Sikh religion isn't what it should be), Guru Arjan Dev was the fifth of the eleven Gurus of Sikhism. He was leader of the religion for a quarter century, and in that time, introduced fixed rules of religious and moral conduct. He was tortured to death in 1606.

June 20 - Solstice (Wicca/Neo-Pagan)
This date marks the winter solstice (Yule) in the southern hemisphere and the summer solstice (Litha/Midsummer) in the northern hemisphere, both major festivals in Wicca and other Pagan/Neo-Pagan religions.

June 21 - St. Aloysius Gonzanga (Christian - Roman Catholic)
This is the memorial day of St. Aloysius Gonzanga, considered to be the patron saint of plague victims (and unofficially of AIDS sufferers as well, according to some). He lived in Rome in the 16th Century, where he cared for plague sufferers and eventually contracted and died of the plague himself.

June 22 to 28, 2008

June 22 - All Saints Day (Christian - Orthodox)
All Saints Day commemorates all the departed, both known and unknown, who have acheived the beatific vision, or direct perception of God. In the Orthodox Church, it is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost.

June 22 - St. Thomas More (Christian - Roman Catholic)
This day commemorates the life of St. Thomas More, who was beheaded in 1535 on the order of Henry VIII of England when he refused to support Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon and the splitting of the Church of England from Rome.

June 24-27 - Corn Dance Festival (Native American - Zuni)
In this festival, the Zuni people plant prayer sticks in the fields and perform ceremonial dances to aid their crops.

Various (summer) - Natsu Matsuri (Shinto)
Natsu Matsuri, or "Summer Festival" is both a celebration of summer and an occasion to pray for protection against the unexpected calamities such as storms and insects that are associated with the season in Japan.

Note - embarrasingly, I forgot a biggie from last week:

June 24 - Fete Saint-Jean-de-Baptiste (Christian - Roman Catholic)
This holiday has its roots as the feast day for St. John the Baptist. Over the past several centuries, it has become a celebration of Quebec and its people (and is also referred to as "Fete Nationale" in Quebec), owing to the recognition of St. John as patron saint of French Canadians.

June 29 to July 5, 2008

July 1 - Shiva Puja Day (Hindu)
This is a day of fasting and offerings to Shiva, one of the principal gods of Hinduism.

July 2 to 5 - Green Bean Ceremony (Native American - Iroquois)
This is an observance of thanksgiving for the bean harvest. It is celebrated with offerings of tobacco, feasting, singing, drumming, and dancing.

July 5 - Birthday of Guru Har Gobind Sahib (Sikh)
Har Gobind was the sixth Guru of Sikhism and lived from 1595 to 1644. He was the first Guru to arm his followers and the first to engage in warfare. This holiday commemorates his life.
