I didn't read the article for fear of taking a look at a banana taped to a wall a second time, but in the article I read, my favorite part was "The banana was meant to be eaten - showing it can easily be replaced."

I'll add that much of art is akin to autograph collecting. If some work attracts
attention in the right crowd....one both vaunted & wealthy....then it occupies
a moment in their shared history. To own that unique icon confers value,
rarity, recognition, status, & acceptance upon the owner. Think of it as
the price of admission to a club.
The interested reader might look up the brilliant work of Dan Flavin, a darling
of the New York art world for mounting a fluorescent light to a wall at a 45
degree angle. Critics were agog at his originality & significance to modern art.
(Yes, I saw it exhibited. I was indeed astounded....but perhaps not as the
artist intended.)
