We're still three months away from election day, so the situation could change.

However, the polls consistently show Biden with a lead over Trump that can't be ignored. This is the case nationally as well as in the swing states that won the election for Trump in 2016.

RealClearPolitics - Election 2020 - General Election: Trump vs. Biden

    Current Polling Averages:

    National: Biden +7.4
    Florida: Biden +6.2
    Wisconsin: Biden +5.0
    Michigan: Biden +7.8
    Pennsylvania: Biden +6.0
    North Carolina: Biden +4.7

What would have to happen for the polls to shift substantially enough for Trump to pull out a win?

I think the only way for Biden to lose is if he should die or get critically sick.

Since the economy is likely not to recover by November, and since the virus is likely to increase when schools open up, the prognosis for Trump's reelection are certainly not good. Frankly, with his near total ineptness, his cozying up to Putin, his weakening of NATO, his upsetting of our traditional allies, his lack of leadership with formulating a sane economic package to keep us from sinking even deeper economically, etc., why should anyone vote for him, except for his base that would cheer him on even if he shot someone in the face on Fifth Avenue as he bragged about prior to the election?

People forget that Trump is the oldest President in US history. He's only 3 years younger than Biden.

    Also, Happy Birthday! :)

Those who live, breathe and die politics, ie Senators, in this case Republican ones, are fleeing Trump as much as they can without getting Trump loyalists too upset. This is a bit like Schrodinger's cat being both dead and alive at the same time, but that's not stopping them from trying that feat.

Did you see this little gem?

After voting for President Trump in 2016 and staunchly defending him in conservative publications, a Federalist Society leader appears to be having some very public buyer's remorse.

Steven Calabresi, co-founder of the powerful conservative legal organization, is now calling on the House of Representatives to do again what it has already done once this year: impeach Trump.

What happened in 2016 that resulted in Clinton, with a gigantic lead, to lose the White House?
    Something did, obviously.

I hope that Biden doesn't make the same mistakes. But Biden is now up against an incumbent, with a long history of treachery and abuse of power. He has to do better than Billary, and I don't think he's got what it takes. Trump's abilities to run a rigged game are legendary, and he holds most of the cards.
I don't think that Biden is going to win, because the USA is not a democracy. It's an oligarchy and the oligarchs want Trump to be president.

There were lots of reasons Hillary lost, which I don't really want this thread to devolve into.

However, one of the problems was that her team basically abandoned their ground game in the Rust Belt leading up to election because they assumed those states were in the bag. If Dems have learned one thing, I'd bet they won't make that mistake again.

I'm not so sure about that. Trump has proved to be unreliable and incompetent and Biden has made clear that he is not going to rock the boat. Biden is clearly the more conservative candidate.

My fear is that Biden may be his own worst enemy. He doesn’t seem very mentally nimble or articulate. While he is able to keep quiet as Trump self-destructs, that’s fine, but soon he will have to show some initiative. Trump will seize on any infelicity and the Trump media machine will exploit it relentlessly.

He probably needs a capable and energetic running mate who can take some of the campaigning load. What in my opinion he should not do is pick someone gimmicky - a professional street-fighter would be better.

If so, it's the most underwhelming Exodus in history.

Schrödinger's cat is successfully blocking reams of critical legislation. That's not being "dead and alive at the same time;" it's simply being deadly.

I thought the same thing, at the time.

Clinton was so convinced that she had it, due to polls, that she got overconfident.

And I'm talking about 2008! Some black kid from Chicago took her nomination like an unwary tourist losing her purse to a mugger.

Then, 2016, the Party of Clinton did the exact same thing. They were so confident that "the polls showed" victory, that they ignored states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. They focused on states like Arizona and North Carolina and lost the whole race.

The Democrats have a history of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

And now, the best candidate they could find is an old white dude thoroughly tied to the Clintons and all the neo-liberal crap of the last few decades. I'm not at all sure that the Democratic party learns from such mistakes.

I think some of it might depend on who is picked as Biden's running mate. Just as long as he doesn't pick Hillary, he should be okay.

    I agree.
Trump is the progressive. Clinton and Biden and such have been the conservative candidates for a long time.

But conservative policies aren't what the oligarchs want. They want progressivism, federal policies that funnel taxpayer dollars to the rich, even more than they do now.

Yes, but to get the taxpayer money, someone has to pay taxes and doesn't happen when the economy tanks - even though tanking the economy is a pretty progressive move.

    That's not really true.

As long as the federal government can keep borrowing money they can keep ratcheting up federal spending while simultaneously cutting taxes.

Then the rich investors put their capital into Chinese manufacturers or offshore banks and everybody's happy.
Except the 99% who actually pay taxes and stuff. But they don't matter or they'd buy a few lobbyists or Senators or something. All they do is vote in a thoroughly rigged system and talk about how great "democracy" is.
