"This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666." -Revelations 13:16

Please share your theories, or interpretations to the book of revelations. Everyone has their own interpretation and way of perceiving of what is esotoric symbolism. Like our fingerprints, the way each individual perceives the world around them is unique.

Interpreting the Symbology in the Book of Revelations

About two years ago, occured events that has and will forever change the rest of my life. I was 18 years old, and I had 1 month before I was to leave home and be on my own. I had completed school and had quit my job. During this month I had decided to fully dedicate myself to God, like never before in my entire life. I read the bible for six, sometimes nine hours a day. All the while I had constantly prayed to God. The spirit of God was very strong within me, I could not even go to sleep, even though I constantly tried. At the most I had about 3 hours of sleep a day. During this period, I did not feel hungry or thirsty. Desire had left me, and along with it, pain and suffering. I was also incapable of getting angry, but was filled with complete compassionate love. I had become united with God. During that period, an event occured, which I myself cannot explain, other than it being the works of God. My mother had instantly become overwelmed with pain in her hands. Crying and wailing she had come to me and asked that I pray for her. I laid my hands on hers, and as I prayed I felt this incredibly warm and tingly surge flow from out my hands. Instantly her hands were healed, along with it, all pain had left. I remember her saying that her hands were really warm.
I also became able to interpret dreams, symbols, and allegory. During this period, I had a series of revelations, some of which I have written down, some of which had turned up lost. I have not shared this with anybody to date, other than my family who was there to witness these things; for fear that someone may think that I am crazy. And yet, I am sharing it in this forum today. I honestly can say that this relationship I had with God had died out as I fell into my own selfishness and ego in the past year and a half. Although it is not as strong, I believe God had left an imprint on me.

Here, I will fully disclose some of my interpretations and what I believe are keys to unlocking symbols of the book of revelations. I will disclose more as time goes by.

It was revealed to me that Satan is a sort of "state of mind" that each of us have, a state of mind which is in direct rebellion with God. It was revealed that Satan is not so much as a single spiritual being, but the collective of this "state of mind" each of us have symbolized into this one entity. It is this "state of mind" that causes all of us to sin, It is this "state of mind" that is the cause of all human suffering.

It was also revealed to me the meaning of 666. First, the threefold repetition of 6's combined symbolizes something itself: It represents
strife, disunity, self-division, and overall the self-destruction of mankind. It also represents animalistic behavior. Each 6 also symbolizes something, they are the things we fall deficient of according to God. The secret to revealing it is, is to look up the three temptations Jesus faced in the wilderness. It is also found in the book of Genesis, the book of Danial, in a quote by Jesus, and a quote by Paul.

    heart-----mind-----soul

Lust of Flesh-----Lust of eyes-----Boastful Pride of life

    Desire-----Ignorance-----Pride

    The Beast-----False Prophet-----Satan

    self-gratification, self-deception, self-glorification

This should be key to undestanding who the dragon and two beasts are.
The threefold number of 6's (666) represents that humanity will collapse within itself due to the cultivation of a world wide self-centered egoistic society, bent on selfish optimism they are those without any spiritual orientation, associating themselves more with their bodies; their physical, materialistic manifestation (the flesh). Those with the mark are those who conform to this society (the kingdom of the beast).

Oracle, good thread. I've been meaning to get onto this subject. ;)

My explanation for the "666" concept is much more simple and does not require a book to be written on it! Let me give you my take on it:

Rev 13:18: "Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man’s number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six."

Therefore, what we can deduct from this scripture straight-away is that a) It is referring to a "wild beast" b) It is a man's number, and c) That the number is 666. This raises several questions: Who is the beast? Who is the man? And what does 666 represent? With that said, would it be illogical to say that if the question/riddle is asked in the Bible, then would it not be logical to say that the answer to the question would not be found in the Bible also? Of course. With that said, let’s look inside the Bible for the answer:

    WHO IS THE WILD BEAST?

The Bible book of Daniel sheds much light on the meaning of “Symbolic Beasts”. Chapter 7 of Daniel contains a vivid tableau of “four huge beast” – a lion, a bear, a leopard, and a fearsome beast with big teeth of iron (Daniel 7:2-7) Daniel tells us that these beasts represent “kings,” or political kingdoms, that rule in succession over vast empires (Daniel 7:17,23).

Regarding the beast of Revelation 13:1,2, The Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible points out that it “combines in itself the joint characteristics of the four beasts of Daniel’s prophecy vision…Accordingly, this first beast [of Revelation] represents the combined forces of all political rule opposed to God in the worlds.” This observation is affirmed by Revelation 13:7, which says of the beast: “Authority was given to it over every tribe and people and tongue and nation”.

Therefore, by the use of Biblical scripture, we have now established whom that “Beast” in Revelation 13:18 is: It is all the political powers of the earth (human governments) which are in opposition to God.

    WHO IS THE MAN?

Revelation 13:18 refers 666 as a “man’s number”, or a “human number”. This could not refer to an individual human, for Satan – not any man – has authority over the beast. (Luke 4:5,6; 1 John 5:19; Revelation 13:2, 18) Rather, the beast’s having “a human number”, or mark, suggests that it is a human entity, not spirit or demon, and therefore manifests certain human traits. What might they be? The Bible answers, saying: “All [humans] have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) The beast’s having “a human number”, therefore, indicates that governments reflect the fallen human condition, the mark of sin and perfection.

I’m sure I don’t need to dig up examples of human failures in government throughout history to re-enforce my point, do I? It goes without saying that human governments have significantly fallen short of God’s divine standards.

    WHAT DOES 666 REPRESENT?

In the scriptures, certain numbers have symbolic significance. The number seven, for example, is often used to symbolize that which is complete, or perfect, in God’s eyes. For instance, God’s creative week comprises of “seven days”, or extended time periods, during which god completely accomplishes his creative purpose regarding the earth (Genesis 1:3-2:3). God’s “sayings” are like silver that has been “clarified seven times,” thus perfectly refined (Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 30:5). The leper Naaman was told to bathe “seven times” in the Jordan River, after which he completely healed (2 Kings 5:10, 14). Is it a coincidence that God uses the number seven to symbolize perfection, completeness and harmony? Not at all. What has this got to do with 666 though?

Six is one short of seven. Would it not be a fitting symbol of something imperfect, or defective, in God’s eyes? Yes, indeed! (2 Chronicles 20:6,7) Moreover, six repeated three times (to the third degree), as 666, powerfully stresses that imperfection. That this is the correct view is supported by the fact that 666 is “a human number,” and the number 666 itself all point to one unmistakable conclusion – gross short shortcoming and failure in the eyes of Jehovah God.

    ANY MORE?

Also, if you look at the surrounding verses of Revelation 13:18, it is talking about the destruction of human governments and the elevation of God’s government – which therefore puts that verse into correct context. Therefore, from the evidence we have gathered, this is the conclusion:

Six-Six-Six = The complete dismal failure and disgusting attempts for humans to try to be a good government over mankind’s history.

Seven = The perfect government that God will bring to this earth.

If you would like me to elaborate on this, feel free to ask. :) The above is just the skeletal structure of the 666 figure.

    WHAT IS THE MARK?

Also what does Revelation 13:17 mean? “And that nobody might be able to buy or sell except a person having the mark…”

I’ll go into that tomorrow or the day after when I have the time – and it is in complete harmony with what I have been saying above. :)

I think 7 represents harmony, not say perfection or completion. The number four represents completion. The story of creation is symbolically representing something else, it is metaphor. Let me show you why. There is a hidden pattern, in fact it gives a sequence within these seven days. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd days completely parallel the 4th, 5th, and 6th day.

    1st (Light) 2nd (Water/Air) 3rd (Dry Land)

4th (Luminaries) 5th (Fish and Birds) 6th (Beasts and Man)

    7th (Rest)

Notice the patturn? The first day wasn't complete untill the 4th, when the luminaries were set in place (likewise the second untill the 5th, and the third untill the 6th). That is why the number four is actually the number for completion.

Not only is it giving you a sequence of numbers, but I organized so you will see that it is SYMBOLICALLY representing THREE things, the 7th day is the harmony between these three things.

Another thing, the 1st day is actually literally translated as THE DAY OF ONE, as in, the moment God was all by himself, it is not talking about days passing by.

Just something to think about. It was also commanded the Israelites not to touch or go near the mountain of sinai lest they die. What do these two things have in common? The knowledge of good and bad. Why does this cause death? Paul in the new testament states that the carnal man cannot recieve the things of god and that by the commandment, sin entered in, because of the weakness of the flesh. One more thing to consider is the thought of the man that somehow he himself can obtain life ( or the power of god) by his own ability " self righteousness" .but the fall of
man comes because they believed the lie rather than the creator who had already given them the promise of life. First by putting them in the garden ( grace) and also giving them the tree of life
which was in the garden, but all this was done with the forknowledge of god as a shadow of the things to come ,that would be fullfilled in himself, in his son. So It is not the earthly man that inheirits the things of god but the spiritual man, not by the letter, but by the spirit of god which transforms the carnal man.which comes through faith in his (christ) righteousness (the tree of life) By the way my thought on 666 has to do with the ability and power of man which falls short of the power of god and has to do with wanting the worship of others. the glory of man or his own self worth. Nebuchadnezzar built an image to himself which measured sixty cubits high and six
cubits wide. Saul the first king of Israel also built an image to himself. Soloman recieved yearly
six hundred and sixty six talents of gold. So whatever the mark of the beast is, it has to do with the worship of man.

i saw a show on the history channel a couple years ago that said the 666 is a modification and the real number is 616, according to scrolls that predated any copy of revelations. i did not see all the show and do not know why it was changed to 666.

Yes ,your post is completely in line with the rest of the bible.
6 Signifies imperfection, something not normal, monstrous.so 666 is mentioned 3 times for emphasis

Just an interesting aside: keep in mind that the idea of a "mark" can be traced back to the mark on Cain to protect him.

I have heard many different things concerning "666" i agree with you, WitnessofJah. The idea of it being the number of the Antichrist (there are many not a single titled one) seems to come out of a reading that conflicts with what the epistles say about the end.
