An intriguing article went up yesterday on The Conversation casting a spotlight on how different religions can be characterized by the sounds they produce during their practices - and how that has changed during the pandemic. Enter the American Religious Sounds Project (ARSP), a collaborative research endeavor that interprets religious diversity by studying the sounds of religious culture.

"...for all audiences, we hope our site will educate you, engage you, and inspire you to think in new ways about religion and its place in American life. As you spend time exploring our site, we invite you to consider: How does our understanding of religion change when we begin by listening for it?"

You can see a gallery of their projects here - American Religious Sounds Project Gallery – American Religious Sounds Project Gallery

What are the sounds of your religion? :D

A tremendous variety of music, and Vedic chanting.

butterflies have very interesting shadows, don't they,
and they are almost silent, sans the light nearly gone.
If, and I wish, that I be scattered here, to join my Spirit.
In the `heaven` of our garden, amongst the Stuff, we'll be.

A small child I once knew called them Flutterbies, which I figured was a more appropriate name, as one fluttered by.

You know that sound when you put your hand under your armpit and then flap your arm?

The "ah" sound is common to many religions. Allah, Buddha, Krishna, Rama, Yahweh.

I started thinking about this when I wondered a bit about the effect of chanting with a certain sound. I never went very deeply into that topic, but it did engage me for a time.

Haha... I think tha's one of mine too, but more specifically the sound of wind through foliage, whether deciduous forest leaves or the tallgrass prairie. Wind sounds different depending on the Land it interacts with.

I still do, it describes them far better than spreading one on your toast.

    Most people accept my quirk.
