So, what's going on here?

Why is the Christian religion, especially the Protestants, tanking so badly, and its members not fleeing to other religions, but to "nones" and "no religion," no less? And the Catholic religion really isn't doing much better; hanging on by its fingernails while its clergy takes a nose dive. .

Man's religious phase connects the time when he first had the intellectual and linguistic capacity to ask why, and the time he got useful answers. He made up answers in between in an effort to assauge his fears. It should be no surprise to see religion vanishing from places where education is prevalent.

Not many decades ago they were proclaiming the death of religion. Guess which demographics have the most babies? Yes. It is the religious demographics that have lots more babies. By the way the picture in the OP is of pews that are open all week long, and so very often there are a few people in them on and off all week.

Now lets see...immigration from Mexico, Donald Trump is the president, and John Oliver's name is quite forgettable... yep religion is not going away in the USA.

Pauline-Christianity were followers of a Pagan-Christ a mythical concept. It was doomed to fail.
It has nothing to do with Jesus son of Mary.

On the one hand, you have Catholicism chucking most of its traditional practices out the door, and parents don't care enough about their own faith to teach their kids. On the other hand, you have mainline Protestant churches which have done much the same; the new generation either doesn't care about denomination and goes for one of several options:
1, feel-good non-denominational churches which are light on theology and don't have a robust spiritual tradition and don't care much about what you do in your day-to-day life;
2, more confessional versions of their Protestant traditions which have retained more or less the same spirit and attitude as the original versions of these Protestant churches, satisfying the need for a longer tradition with some robust theology;
3, they're seeking something which is older and truer to Christianity's roots than the Protestant churches and becoming either Catholic or Orthodox;
4, they're noping out of Christianity altogether because too many churches have been used like political clubs, their friends and family never put an emphasis on living the faith and never demonstrated what it looks like to authentically live the Christian faith, and many individual congregations within Protestantism are run like personality cults. I believe Protestantism actually has higher rates of sexual abuse than Catholic parishes do, at least in the US, last I checked.

The shift has been toward the prosperity doctrine televangelist type of churches. They seem to be growing.

Yea, it is written in the Book of Cyril...
I think it has more to do with the decentralisation of community more than anything else. The local church used to be the civic and social center of a community, cheap telecommunications and affordable travel options have made it much less so.

Maybe among the middle-aged, sure. I'd like to think at least my generation has developed enough of a BS meter when it comes to charlatans propping themselves up as preachers.

You would think maybe. But that's not what I have observed in my part of the country anyway. Those megachurch corporations are teeming with young folks. Can't speak for where you are from obviously.

It is happening because we are in the last days and nearing the end of the church age. If you read and understood the Bible this information would not be unexpected.

My opinion only, technically It started declining (not in numbers) the day St. Paul died.
Acceleration of dying off of human perception organs, which also manifested with increase of Az, Parkinson's, depression, e.tc.

We've always been "in the last days." The predictions have been endless, and each and every one, no exceptions, a total failure. Maybe it's just that people are beginning to notice that.

After all, repeating the same mistake, time after time after time after endless time, and hoping that it won't be a mistake this time, seems pretty silly.

You like this no doubt. However, it is no surprise to Christians, it has been expected.

W hat is called the great falling away has been taught and preached about for centuries. It comes directly from the Bible.

So feel free to gloat, as many of you must.

We who know what it means will not be bothered by it, we simply smile.

It’s not Christianity that is dying....it’s Christendom......please don’t confuse them. God doesn’t. (Matthew 7:21-23) Christianity is still alive and well, it’s just not practiced by the majority, as Jesus said. (Matthew 7:13-14)

IMO, it's them damn wooden pews. Looks like seating on a slave barge.

I'd suggest filling the church with D-BOX seats that move and vibrate. Then when the priest says something especially inspirational they can have the seats vibrate and spin around.

The charts document the decline of organized religion. The era where masses of people were expected to believe in one particular set of theological ideas and practices is ending. The era where people are more individualistic about their beliefs is growing.

Everything in existence is born, grows and finally dies. Organized religion is not separate from that.
