The Sadness of Reddit Catholicism and Christianity

I'm new to this forum I came here from Reddit where there is virtually no discussion, just echo chambers. I'm looking for discussion and to bond with people.

I've been a Catholic all my life, I predate the internet era. As a Catholic I was essentially taught to go to Mass, Pray (especially the Rosary), help your fellow man, and avoid Mortal Sins and confess venial sins frequently. That's it, that's Catholicism in a nutshell; everything else sort itself out.

But, man, on Reddit Christianity and Catholicism you meet the biggest weirdos. You meet Catholics (who tend to be converts) who have a Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Fetish, treating them as if they are saints. Well, they were both blatantly Racist, essentially White Supremacist and C.S. Lewis was not even Catholic. Then you meet other Catholics who are consistently treating the Catholic Catechism as if it were the Bible. I don't even think the laity is supposed to be reading the Catechism, that's stuff for Priest. I and my family and all the plethora Catholics in my life have never read the Catholics Catechism. Isn't this stuff all just common sense?

So, what is going on with Reddit Christianity and Catholicism? Who are these people and what kind of Catholicism are they looking into? I don't think they are Holy Roman Catholics or part of the Easter Rite either. I've run into these Catholic Cults online usually in Washington and Oregon who insist they are Catholic but are just White Supremacist outfits not related to the Church.

Sad Wold on that Reddit, Sad World.

One tends to run into many differing, opposing points of view on the RF forums.

Yet for the most part it remains civilized compared to reddit.

All I can really say after converting to Roman Catholic as an adult (five years ago today), leaving, and appreciating The Church, I believe indoctrinates (those raised in the Church or been there over ten or some odd years) have a different perspective and practice than converts. For instance, when I went to The Church (and had a RC friend) haven't read the full Bible if not at all. My family isn't christian; but, I understand from Christianity, reading the Bible is a must. Its not evangelical specifically, but outside liturgical Churches, its the cornerstone of the faith.

Since Catholics don't read the Bible in the same manner that others do, and the bible isn't very straightforward in spiritual matters. the Catechism really fills in the blanks. It also fleshes out the myths people have of the Church because the bible doesn't address a lot of things that's in the Catechism. It also doesn't have two full chapters of not praying to idols and why that is so important. It's not the Eucharist, of course, but something I think indoctrinates take for granted.

A lot of converts (not myself personally) probably come from evangelical homes. So, that could be the reason for the Catechism being important. It is also useful to learn about The Church in which you practice. It does strengthen your faith (in my opinion). Very worth while if you get the chance to read it. Reading about the Church history may help. For me, it was sad but people's perspectives are different especially if you love history.

I honestly think converts can learn from indoctrinates about the importance of devotion and the sacraments. I think indoctrinates can learn more from study and understanding their faith as to interrelate it to practice. I went to a Catholic retreat couple years ago; and, one lady who is probably a year or two less than yours (I was around when the pagers existed and internet just reached the computers) and she said she wasn't even allowed to read her bible.

It can also be an age and location thing too. We have more liberal catholics in our parish while in others I was yelled at by priest but the one here spent almost two hours with me in confession. The politics involved with the Church, now that I would skip. I have too much respect for priests to listen to that none sense. Stick with what you know and pray about it.

I never been to redit. If you get to go to our DIRs in the forum areas. you'll find a Catholic forum under christianity. You can speak with people who share like understanding without the "rest of us" interrupting you all.

    Welcome

As if God wasn't a racist? Don't forget that God chose the Jews to the exclusion of any other nation or race. Even Christ called the Canaanites dogs, Paul called the Greeks of Ephesus wild animals, and the Cretans " liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons." Yet if it were true, then what?

Philip Pullman labelled CS Lewis as "blatantly racist" and "monumentally disparaging of women".

I would concede that Lewis has certain prejudices which are relatively transparent in all his works, even prejudices against the working class, but they can be accomodated for the sake of the truth that he is trying to inculcate. Pullman, however, has been labelled as "semi-satanic" (that is pretty mild considering), is celebrated for a trilogy where, the" universe is ruled by a senile, viciously sadistic deity who has to be deposed in battle so that its inhabitants can join with angels in creating a "republic of heaven"".

On a scale of moral badness, a disclosure that one had prejudices (and who doesn't) is small fry compared with public defamation of God by accusing him of being sadistic. Were Pullman living under the Jewish Levitical law, he would have been executed for blasphemy.

The anti-racist brigade is not necessarily the godly brigade. More like the rank hypocrisy brigade.

Reddit is a playground compared to the glory days of 4chan.

And there are of plenty animals on Facebook too or people resort to reporting when they can't win an argument then you get banned for 30 days.

Well..... not really. They were supposed to be priests to the world so He really didn't exclude any other nation or race. At least according to what I read in scripture.

    Wow! OK, let's see:
Genesis 22:18....The Jews would be 'doing all the work', while the nations would get the blessings from it. And then we have Acts of the Apostles 10:34-35.

No, I think the Phoenician woman called herself that?

No, Paul actually was put in the arena at Ephesus, fighting real wild beasts. And survived.

Again no. He was quoting one of their own prophets..... Titus 1:12.

    Wow! Just...wow!

You won't find that here. I'm new here too, and there are only a handful of Catholics on these forums that I've seen, which is strange but kind of nice actually, because a lot of Catholics I've met online in other forums, sadly, seem overly confrontational and sometimes a little full of themselves... I've been doing this whole forum posting thing for about 10 years now.

But there is a Catholic monk here, who you have to meet! :)

...Just a really great person to listen to at our Catholic DIR, which is sadly underpopulated. I read all his posts because the Br. there is just a joy to hear from. But you might have to register as an adherant of the Abrahamic religions, which is quick and easy, to gain access.

    Nice to see another Catholic.

I wouldn't say being an echo-chamber is reddit's problem. The real issue is it's downvote system which allows anyone to downvote you for no reason thus making your post less visible, ruining your reputation and possibly getting you banned.
