While he's not the funniest comedian (though he is quite funny), he's among my favorites because if his animal rights activism.

I dislike awards shows because there is so little
entertainment value. But when he hosts, everything
changes. Great writing & delivery. No one compares.

    Now, on to another show....
A couple favorite scenes from Extras....

I stand corrected. I had assumed Jane was his wife. I get a kick out of the "Jane with all her friends" meme he has on Facebook.

I understand it's all but marriage in the eyes of god because god doesn't exist.

And in Rickie's own words "its lasted longer than most marriages"

In Gervais's "Life's Too Short", Rosamund Hanson
& Warwick Davis steal the show....

BTW, this series was an idea that Warwick's proposed to Gervais.
Hey...where the Heck is @Shadow Wolf?

They're kind of a form of torture. Once in a while, someone will do something really spectacular on an award show that couldn't really have occurred in any other format. And I really love when that happens. Unfortunately, it's a very rare occurrence, and the many MANY hours of monotonous drivel and shameless promotion that goes on otherwise is just hellish.

All I can say is that I thank God for YouTube when these awards shows come around, because I can skip the many hours of horrific BS and see (even if a day or so later) the really spectacular performance, if it occurred. Gervais' opening monologue was one of those times. It was so rude I cringed, and yet it WAS really funny! All the more so for it being aimed at a bunch of way over-paid actors that had done nothing to warrant all that silly praise and attention. And who knew it.

Here's a couple of very memorable performances from award shows past (IMO, anyway) ...

Melissa Etheridge was so sick from chemo at the Grammy's 12 years ago that she very nearly couldn't go on. So they put Joss Stone on stage first, and with her, in case she couldn't perform or if she started but couldn't continue. But at the last minute Melissa went on, and she KILLED IT! Bald head and all!

Here's a fantastic introduction by Jon Stewart honoring Bruce Springsteen at the Kennedy Center Honors ... Funny, but poignant, too.

Here's Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler crushing it at the CMAs ...

ACDC opening the Grammys a few years back ...

And there are a lot of really fun and funny monologues out there; check out the Mark Train Award for humor monologues. They're almost always pretty good.

Yet, these are all EXCEPTIONS to the general rule of hours of really, really boring programming. :)

I keep telling you they're not award shows, they're Ricky Gervais standups with frequent, lengthy, and irritating interruptions from pompous, self-righteous [that particular word he frequently describes irritating people as, who wouldn't hear the word so often if they'd quit acting like it]. Good thing he's lambasting and harpooning them. It's rude to interrupt.

He's always going to have my respect for that, using his celebrity status to promote a very worthy cause.

I've been on a bit of Gervais binge the last few days. Watched the 3rd season of After Life and started to watch Derek. My all time favourite is still Life's Too Short, must watch that again sometime.

I met him in person once. I worked in an office, and he came to our state and had lots of office people come review a prototype show. My co workers got me to go, and we had to fill out surveys about what we thought about the show and a little about ourselves and our office lives. He was of course gathering intel. Then he came out with the American version of The Office.

For the record I am not an accountant and do not own a beet farm.

I'm not much for sensationalized overhyped comedians.

I find him as funny as Jack Daniel's stub toe.
