I thought the reason was watching Ralphie shooting his eye with a BB-gun, after half the town warned him it would happen.

The reason for the season is to give us all an excuse to be a little nicer to each other for a cpl of weeks.
Not sure why we need an excuse, but since we do, I'm glad it's there.

I've never thought of it that way, but it does make since. In part with the mindless consumerism, people do take note to who gives the better gifts, which certainly does bring prestige in the same manner that a chief giving during a potlatch gain prestige.
