This is really startling to watch the data change over time!

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I posted it in general religious debates.

That was fun to watch. Thanks. Assuming the video's reasonable approximation to reality, we "can tell" who the breeders are among believers. Would have been interesting to slow the pace and have a list of significant events and geographical locations where increases and decreases have taken place.

What this doesn't show is the world population growth in the same period from 1952 which was around 2,631,000,000

    Now its about 7,731,000,000

So in real terms, despite the animation, religion is decreasing

You can get that information on Pew.

No just numbers. The population has increased by over 5 billion. I assume the animation to be reasonably accurate,. It does not keep up with population growth.

Individual religions are for the most part going the same way, the only one beating the trend is islam.

You could also Google it, which confirms my claim.

These numbers are from Pew research bro. And if you download a dataset you can all of those calculations.

I think you are right anyway.

There is no category for non-belief in the chart. It would be very interesting to see how that has changed over time also.

There are (or were) no real figures, i tried to get some together on Topix a few years ago. All i could find then was "current" data from Wikipedia (taken with as much salt as required) and the CIA (who somehow forgot to count China, Europe and Australia)

I did eventually compile census data from various countries but it was far from complete

When I said data set, it IS the raw data.

Anyway great. BTW, I am no sis. I am bro. ;) I normally call ladies "brother" and get embarrassed but this is a first.

    Cheers.

Sobering data. To think that there were less than 80 million Muslims just a few decades ago.

In a very real sense, most of Islaam is living right now.

Also, this video reminds me of how wild demographic growth has been. No wonder that it has become so difficult to reach political understanding in most situations.

I agree and was disappointed by that information's absence. Time to write to Pew and protest.

    What...no Mormons? (hint...we ain't Protestants...)

As it happens, in 1945 there were 979,454 of us. As of 2018, there are 16,313,735 of us. Although the growth rate has shrunk to 2% or a bit less over the last few years, we are still growing, and guess what?

That's about six times the world population growth rate. Even at a measly 2% growth rate lately, it still outstrips the world population growth rate, by at least a little bit.

And no, we don't count dead people.

Just gettin' a word in there. Haven't a clue why, just....wanted to do it. I do have to wonder why that chart, which included some rather offbeat and far less populated groups, didn't include us. (sniff) I'll bet the Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists and a couple of others might want to have a say, too. They aren't Protestants either, and if someone is going to divide Christianity into Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, where DO they put the folks who aren't either one, but are Christian?

(shrug) As I said....I"m just sayin'

It probably wouldn't be too hard to make a spreadsheet animation swapping this to as a percentage of the world population. Neat little project I may take a stab at.
