I guess we live in a post-atlas age, too.

Although, in fairness, I recall back when I first started looking at maps, around age 5, I encountered maps that looked like this:

It was common practice to put Alaska and Hawaii in an inset at the bottom or to the side, which distorted where they were actually located. Also, there was a different scale for the Alaska map, which makes Alaska appear smaller than Texas. When my dad told me that Alaska was bigger than Texas, I didn't believe him. Then he got me a globe.
