Its an important subject, researching whether people burn in hell and what all of that stuff means. Remember also passages about the furnace of affliction, purification. Remember the opening of Isaiah in which he has a vision where his lips are purified with hot coals from the altar. Remember, too, the flaming sword of the guardian of Eden and the way to the tree of life. The serpents in the wilderness had a fiery bite. The fat of the sacrifice must be burned...etc.

The burning bush in the wild has a spreading fire. The English says consuming, yet the bush isn't burned. It is probably a spreading fire. That is only a guess not a scholarly thing, but a consuming fire would destroy the bush would it not? A spreading fire would not, and it would explain why Moses has to take off his sandals. His feet probably touch that fire, and there is probably some kind of purification going on there. I don't know why it would start at his feet, but maybe it does and then goes all over him?

The lake of fire is first found in Egyptian mythology in the period from about 2200 to 2000 BC, in the Coffin Texts.

It did not originate in Judaism or the Bible.

Dear Brickjectivity: That is one incredible post! You have re-awakened something the Lord spoke to me many moons ago re-guarding the flaming swords of the Lord expressed in angelic beings guarding the way to the Tree of Life. Those swords are flaming swords, swirling in every direction. Thank you for your diligence as Mod.,and much thanks for this wonderful post!

I intend on pursuing this theme for a few more posts. Hopefully we can be enlarged in His word & ways.

Dear Leov: Indeed it does & as we proceed in this theme will be evident.

In contemplating the Lake we shall consider #3 first.

    What the Lake is NOT=

    Hell or death.

The Scripture declares "death and hell" terminated in the Lake.

    Please see Rev. 20:14

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire....">>>>

    Yes, there is more>>>>>

    "Which IS the second death."

Are we listening? As Judge Judy would say>>>

    "Put on your listening ears."

    The Lake IS NOT hell!

All aspects of hell end in the Lake>>>>>ALL!

    Which brings us to #2.

What is the Lake of Fire?

According to the Revelation, the ONLY book of Scripture speaking of the Lake, the Lake of Fire IS the 2nd Death.

Which brings us to Rev. 20:15.

"Whoever is not found in the Book of life" will experience the 2nd death.

    Alert!

    But there is more.

Let us now turn to Rev. 21:8 which says>>>

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

Are we listening? Is our listening ears on?

    1. The fearful.

    2. The unbelieving.

    3. ALL liars

    4. Whoremongers & sorcerers, & idolaters.

    "Shall have their part"
    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

The Book of Life is where one must be registered!

The question we must now consider is>>>

    Are all believers overcomers?

We will now turn to Rev.2:11 which states >>>

"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death."

I repeat: are all believers overcomers?

What do you perceive "hell" to be?

I believe that the "lake of fire" is the same as "gehenna" which is where he consigned the wicked Pharisees.

What is "gehenna" (often mistranslated "hell") in your belief system?

Dear Deeje: My belief system is that the all of ta panta is consummated in Him.

The way for all is through the fires, for fire is the great uniter and reconciler of all things; and things which without fire can never be united, in and through the fire are changed and become one.

Therefore every coming of Christ, even in grace, is a day of judgment. Therefore there are fires even for the elect both now, (1 Pet. 1:7, and 4: 12) and in the coming day; (1 Cor. 3:. 13, 15.) for “our God is a consuming fire;” (Heb. 12: 29.) and to dwell in Him we must have a life, which, because it is of the fire, for fire burns not fire, can stand unhurt in it.

Therefore our Lord “came to cast fire into the earth,” and desired nothing more than “that it should be already kindled;” (S. Luke 12: 49) therefore He says,

    Mark 9: 49-

For this is the very “baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire,” (Matt. 3: 11) that “spirit of judgment and burning,” promised by the prophet, "with which the Lord shall purge away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and cleanse the blood of Jerusalem; after which He will create on every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and on all her assemblies, a cloud of smoke by day, and the brightness of flame of fire by night; and upon all, the glory shall be a defence; (Isa. 4: 4, 5) for “He is like a refiner’s fire, and like a fuller’s soap; and He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He shall purify the sons of Levi as gold and silver are purged, that they may offer to the Lord an offering of righteousness.” (Mal. 3: 3). And as by the hidden fire of this present life, shut up in these bodies of corruption, we are able by the wondrous chemistry of nature through corruption to change the fruits and flesh of the earth into our blood, and from blood again into our flesh and bone and sinew; so by the fire of God can we be changed, and made partakers of Christ’s flesh and blood. In and through Christ we have received this transmutation; (Rom. 5: 11) and through His Spirit, which is fire, is this same change accomplished in us.

    NOTE:

Numbers 28: 6. By this double sense a veil covers the letter, veiling yet revealing God’s purpose; for His purpose to the creature is through destruction to perfect it, and by fire to make it a bride unto the Lord. For a kindred reason some of the angels are called Seraphim, that is burning ones; for like the Lord, whose throne is flames of fire, (Dan. 7: 9,10.) they also are as fire; as it is written, “He makes His angels spirits, His messengers a flame of fire.” (Heb. 1: 7, and Psalm 104:4)

    And as with the first-fruits, so with the harvest. The world to be saved must some day know the same baptism. For “the Lord will come with fire,” and “by fire and by His sword will He plead with all flesh, and the slain of the Lord shall be many.” (Isa. 66: 15, 16.) The promised baptism or outpouring of the Spirit must be judgment, for the Spirit cannot be poured on man without consuming this flesh to quicken a better life;

    NOTE:

James 1: 20) works both righteousness and life, and is set forth in that “warfare of the service of the tabernacle” (See Numbers 4: 23, 30, and 8: 24, 25; margin: and compare 1 Tim. 1: eighteen) by which that which was of the earth was made to ascend to God through fire a sweet sacrifice.

    The 2nd Death

“Orthodox theology holds the second death to be a state of endless torment in which the sufferers are held forever in conscious being by a continuous act of Divine preservation, with the soul object of a punishment without end. This however would in no sense be death. The second death does not perpetuate the hopeless condition of the sinner to all eternity.

What the Holy Spirit means by ‘fire and brimstone’ is ‘divine purification,’ or a judgment fire which consumes all that is antagonistic to divine law and love.

Before the Great White Throne, that vast throng, their naked spirits conscious now of the blazing holiness of God, will be subjected to the process of the second death. What those processes are, their intensity and their duration, we are not told. They will suffice, however, not in themselves to perfect, but to bring those who suffer them to that agreement with the judgment upon sin which they effect, and through the cross finally to reconcile them to God (Col. 1:20), in a subjection where He will be ‘All in all.’ When that acquiescence in judgment upon sin is reached, and applied in soul and spirit, then will be possible the final victory over death. Hence it is written that when this subjection is reached, then and only then, ‘the last enemy, death, shall be destroyed.’ ” -A. E. Saxby

The final question on this link is for each of us to answer. Is our God the Consuming Fire the Lake of all lakes, the God of theion?

The Hell of Heaven -Jan Antonsson-

I woke abruptly from an alcohol-induced haze; liquid courage enough to ram my car into a freeway abutment. Multi-hued flames surrounded me, invaded me, but there was no pain. Ribbons of color danced around and in me. Suspended in, buoyed by flame, I attempted a step. Like walking on a cushion of air, there was no sense of movement. Profound beauty mingled with terror and anguish. I wondered at the absence of demons and the screams of tormented souls. “No one will believe me,” I thought, trying to believe it myself.

“Welcome, Driscoll,” a voice whispered. “We’ve been waiting for you. Your place is prepared.”

Terrified, I cried out, “Where am I, who are you?”

“In hell, of course.” I am the hell which you so dreaded. How does it feel?”

“Um, well, it isn’t exactly as I’d imagined it. This isn’t what the preacher described last Sunday.”

“No, it’s not. He is ignorant and blind. He lied to you, though he doesn’t really know it. He only echoed his professors in seminary.”

If this is hell, are you the devil?

As beautiful as a well-tuned bell, a deep, joyful chuckle vibrated within and around me.

“No, I’m afraid you have the wrong guy, my friend.”

    “Who then?”

“Do you remember the text your pastor harped on for so long last Sunday?”

“You mean the ‘lake of fire’ text?”

“The very one. That lake is not a place. It is Me.”

    “Not sure I’m following you.”

“I AM the One you call God. I am the Creator and the Destroyer of all that is unhealthy and destructive within you. Hell is coming home to Me, to dwell in the fire that is Me, the all-consuming fire.”

I shuddered, terrified suddenly of this Voice. Would hell be less terrifying?

“Are you sending me to hell?”

“Well, my beloved friend, you are in hell already. Don’t you see the fire?”

“Well, yes, but it doesn’t hurt.”

Again, His chuckle reverberated within me.

“Most get it wrong, I’m afraid. They mean well, but they interpret the writings of the prophets and the words of my Son in a way that gives them power over others. Think of it this way. Didn’t the terror of hell keep you on the straight and narrow for a long time?”

    “Yes.”

“Priests and preachers, popes and prelates all discovered that their flocks were more compliant when they believed that their particular church was the only path to Me. If they kept them terrified of an eternal torment, they sinned less and kept the church coffers full.”

    “So, no hell?”

“Not exactly. Remember the Lake of Fire. But there is definitely no eternal hell…”

“You mean I won’t burn forever?”

“Let me ask you a question. Did the police in Portland where you lived shoot people if they were five miles an hour over the speed limit?”

    “No.”

“Why then would I send a beloved child of mine to suffer in torment for eternity for a sin? Your courts tried to keep the punishment somewhat in balance with the crime, right?”

“Yes, I suppose so, though many times justice depended on the color of skin or the wealth of the person accused.”

“Yes, yes, but I’m not talking about that kind of inequality. I’m talking about justice based on the balance of crime and punishment.”

“You mean the punishment fits the crime?”

    “Exactly. You were gay, right?”

    “Yes.”

“So, if homosexuality is a missing of the mark, what you call a sin, for each homosexual act or thought, how long should I punish you to make justice balance?”

    “I have no idea.”

    “Come on, give me a number—five years, 50, 50,000, 50 million?”

“Well, to make it interesting, let’s say 50 million.”

“Fair enough. So let’s say there are 10,000 events for which I punish you for 50 million times each. That totals 500 billion years. Is that eternity?”

    “Not even close.”

“So we can say that all of your sins of that kind don’t total eternity. How about if we throw in all the rest of your sins?”

“I don’t know how many that would be.”

“Would it equal eternity, if we could put a number to it?”

“Well, probably not…no, it couldn’t, because eternity is infinite and my sins are not.”

“Exactly!” I heard the smile in His voice. “Now let’s talk about purpose. Why would I want to punish you at all?”

“Well, You’re a holy and just God. You have to punish those who disobey you?”

“That makes me so sad. If one of your children wrote on the wall with a crayon, would you hold her hand to the burner of the stove?”

“No, of course not! I’d be a monster.”

“Why would you think you’re better than Me?”

I was thunderstruck. Why indeed? How could I, a mere mortal think I was more compassionate than the God of love? I fell on my face. “Do to me according to Your will and Your goodness,” I wept. My body trembled with heart-wrenching sobs as the realization of His love surged over and within me. I drowned in His love, knew His infinite compassion and mercy. It felt as if I were disintegrating into my component atoms, dissolving in the chrysalis of Him, being reorganized from a crawling caterpillar into a creature designed to fly. Oddly, there was no pain, only joy and blessed relief. The fire didn’t fade, but now my spirit danced in harmony with it. I had no sense of passing time. Finally, I felt arms around me, folding me against a mighty chest. I heard His heartbeat, felt His warmth.

“Welcome home, my beloved son. I’ve longed for this moment from all eternity past. It’s so good to have you here.”

Then I was at peace. I am still at peace, content to dwell within His everlasting arms. He is that for which I searched, longed for in all the twinings of body that never satisfied. As the poet said,

    Naught satisfies thee,

    Which satisfies not Me.
