The Kindness Box

A brand new survey from Travelodge offers some upbeat news, just in time for Random Acts of Kindness Day! It shows that kindness has been the salve helping Britons get through the COVID-19 pandemic.

But it digs deeper. It ranks acts of kindness in terms of how much they have touched people in the last year, and identifies the UK’s top 10 "Kindness Heroes". It also reveals how real people behind this hotel chain have stepped up to offer support to those in need.

The hotel chain has decided to share its Kindness Report to coincide with Random Acts of Kindness Week, February 14-20.

From that same site -

An experiment in kindness, Good Money is all about inspiring others to do good. It involves donating money to charity using one and five dollar bills that have been stamped with "this money has been used for good." By marking the money, the team behind the initiative at Good Virus hope to motivate others to join them.

Believing in the viral nature of kindness, project organizers hope that when people see the stamp on the bills they will also want to use the money for a good cause.

Now in its experimental stage, monitoring the Good Money is key. People who come across the stamps are encouraged to visit the website where they can log their location along with the bill's serial number on a map in order to keep track of where kind acts are taking place.

Being kind came with greater eudaimonic happiness for women than for men, too. According to Hui, this could be because, in many cultures, women are expected to be kinder than men; so, they may have more to gain from it. And younger participants experienced more happiness when they were kind than older participants, perhaps for developmental reasons, he says. Younger adults are at a stage of life where they tend to be figuring out their identity and actively seeking the purpose and meaning in life that kindness can bring, less so than pleasure and comfort.

What other, specific benefits might kindness have? The researchers found that people who were kind tended to have higher self-esteem and a sense of self-efficacy. To a lesser degree, they also experienced less depression and anxiety and improved physical health—with the links to health being strongest in older adults.

Comes from this site -

Helping others is one of the noblest acts that can be done by humans. The virtues of being of service to individuals who need it most has been extolled as one of the duties and obligation of being called a human being. Yet often people do not help out of compassion, but because it is customary to do so, or for some motives that may range from being perceived as a good person to getting some benefit out of the act. If there is a motive behind the act then it cannot be termed as help. It becomes a ‘business’ deal.

Real help is when one helps out of his feeling of compassion. Knowing that he is in a unique position to extend help to the person and appreciate this opportunity to do something worthwhile.

For example -

A team at the University of Cambridge’s School of Medicine, led by Dr Christopher Williams, has found that mindfulness and laughter can help to protect people from the ill-effects of loneliness. Social isolation has long been a problem in some quarters of the UK but it has got worse due to the lockdowns that have been imposed in the country. This is why Williams began to look into the issue.

His research showed that mindfulness-meditation along with the use of certain technologies, such as robotic pets, could help people to overcome the worst effects of loneliness. According to the academics involved, a combination of educational and psychological interventions appear to be best in this regard.
