Those people are really stupid because even if it did work (it's totally sci-fi and we're nowhere near that sort of technology), it would just be a copy and the original would still die. They wouldn't be the ones experiencing it.

Right. There will be a lot of violence and likely social collapse so at least some of them would likely be killed. Maybe many of them.
