THE First Democratic Primary Debate Thread

To protest the status quo. Notice that neither Trump nor Hillary received over 48.2% of the vote. IMO, it's a civic duty to vote, but that doesn't mean I have to bend over and just accept whatever candidate the two parties throw at me. If either of them want my vote, they'll have to earn it.
That I can understand, but there are a million third party/independent/write in candidates you could pick to accomplish that. If you're a lefty, I don't understand voting for a right wing candidate.

Warren will likely wipe the floor with everyone on day 1, though O’Rourke has charisma on his side; so if he keeps his cool (expected) and has studied enough to seem at least a student of Warren (maybe), then it could be a draw.

Day 2 is a whole other issue. Those first four could be a wildcard toss-up.

I’ve been pro-Warren since before she knew she was going to run. So I’ll do my best to watch the first debate. The 2nd one too if possible.
I think O'Rourke will ultimately lose out. Pete Buttigieg has stolen most of his thunder, and he also has much more substantive policy positions and statements to boot. O'Rourke has already made enough gaffes to where I think he'll peter out by the end of the year. I don't want any of the Democrats to seem like a "student" of anybody else; I'd just vote for the master in that case. I want to see each of them bring fresh, substantive ideas to the table that go beyond mere talking points and get to concrete, on-the-ground proposals that the public can actually examine and talk about. What are each of them going to do about the immense amount of plastic pollution making its way into the oceans? What will they do about the plastic already there? How will they make it so that health care costs get cut in half and go back down to what they were in 2000, when you could get health care for a family of four (with coverage for pre-existing conditions included) for $100 a month? What about drug costs? I want to hear them talk about issues that directly affect my quality of life as an average American.

IMO, the Libertarian party has the best chance to break the 3rd Party barrier. Currently, and probably for several years, they have no chance of winning the WH, but they've made several inroads in local and state elections.

If the Democrats want to win the WH, they'll need to convince a majority that their candidate is much better than the current President loafing on the WH couch.

Respectfully: Warren is a swamp monster?
I don't trust anyone who panders to minorities and activists just so they can get woke points. And I especially don't trust someone who is so willing to pander that they would knowingly lie about their own race for decades, even on official documentation. I want a candidate who has concrete ideas and shows some authenticity and honesty. So far, Tulsi, Yang and Buttigieg sound like those kinds of people to me.

Sometimes Libertarian candidates are better. One I voted for, for example, not only made the community a ca.paign priority, he had done much work before for the community. He was by far and large the vastly superior choice over Pence and the Conservative-leaning Dem that was running for governor of Indiana.

It's complicated.
Consider what a candidate could actually accomplish in office....
Bernie would never be able to turn Ameristan socialist.
But he could avoid wars. (He's better than Hillary or Trump in this regard.)
This result could be more libertarian than a Trump presidency.
Passing universal healthcare legislation is very achievable in a Sanders presidency.

Ensuring that Social Security isn't privatized and Medicaid/Medicare are protected/expanded is very achievable in a Sanders presidency.

Moving the country in the direction of renewable energy rather than fossil fuels is very achievable in a Sanders presidency.

Reducing the Defense budget and reallocating those funds to programs that actually need them is very achievable in a Sanders presidency.

And who could forget, expansion of public education - again very achievable in a Sanders presidency.

Edit to add: I will grant that whether Reps can retain control of the Senate will play a large factor in how achievable these things are.

So if Bernie & Donald were the 2 competing for the top slot (& it's only 2....no
libertarian would ever win), then Bernie could've earned this libertarian's vote.
My argument isn't that libertarians shouldn't vote for Bernie over Trump. My argument is that lefties shouldn't vote for a libertarian over a centrist Dem, who is much more likely to implement policies that align with progressive goals.

Note that "right" & "left" make sense when comparing Dems & Pubs.
But toss in libertarians & other parties...then the labels don't fit.
This is because "right" can mean pro-economic liberty or authoritarianism.
We libs are the former, but not the latter.
I don’t follow you. o_O

Names change. The titles of “Democrat” or “Republican” are fleeting.
It is the stance that matters.
Left has and always will equate with Progressivism, Liberalism, Individualism, Liberty, Freedom, Choice, Equality.

Right has and always will = Conservatism, Conformity, Authoritarianism, Uniform and formalized rules covering all aspects of life and mind.

- Economically, either one can be successful, via adaptivity and flexibility vs stick-to-it-ness and patience.
- Neither one shirks hard work and gumption.

So, while “Right” might be your opinion of ‘pro-economic’, it has never meant ‘liberty’. o_O

I identify libertarians as right wing because their political philosophy is generally born out of opposition to most/all government, which they share with conservatives. In those areas where they might agree with a left-wing policy, they do so from an anti-government perspective. Even though their policies at times depart from Pubs, their logic comes from the same philosophical basis.

I only hope that it's more libertarian (eg, allowing private care too)
than what Hillary proposed back in the day (making private care illegal).
I would virtually guarantee that it will. People would be able to purchase supplemental insurance on top of Medicare.

I expect that no matter who wins.
Don't count your eggs yet, undoing those programs is high on the GOP to do list.

That's more a matter for Congress.
But I favor it too.
And as we've already seen, it won't happen under GOP leadership.

I urge lefties to vote Libertarian.
Many real liberals belong there.
Lol am I a real liberal, Rev? ;)

Everything you cite in this post is prit much part of the Democratic platform.

I urge libertarians to vote Progressive/Democratic.
It has always been the only viable choice for what they want/need.

The Centrist (New Democrats) are every bit warmongers as the right, it's just they don't use it as a platform to energize their base. :(

Note that I said many (not every) real liberal belongs in our camp.
By "real" I mean that they advocate things like....
- Lifting restrictions on sins: prostitution & recreational drugs.
- Eliminating the draft.
- Ending foreign adventurism.
- Separation of church & state
Phew! I made the cut. :okay::raisedhands:

I think it's an exaggeration to say they're "every bit" warmongers as the Right. Too hawkish, yes I'd agree. But that rationalization for voting 3rd party in 2016 has been debunked in the Trump era. Would Clinton have pulled out of the Iran deal? Would she be gearing up for war there? Would she have pissed off and alienated almost all our allies? Doubtful.
