The Feral Class

It's nothing new in the world and I had never given it much thought prior to a few years ago, but the feral class of people are present, even in some of our cities. I was wondering if anyone knew much about the social aspects of this particular demographic. Are they travelers, nomads, or outcasts? Or, are they simply sick of society and the way our society operates, being of the world but not part of our social structures? Do they involve themselves in politics or do they live independent from our governmental policies? I'm curious because I would think there's a reason for the feral lifestyle.

I assume you are talking about the growing number of homeless people? IMHO, there are a number of reasons. The top three being drug addiction, mental illness, and capitalism.

Do you mean feral people? Like the alleged accounts of feral people living in the vastness of Appalachia or the Pacific Northwest?

If they're living in cities or anything resembling civilization they're not feral. They're just nomads or vagabonds. Could be people like the hippies were, living by their own standards but hovering near civilization. Even off-grid folk aren't feral. They still possess things that make them civilized like homes, septic systems, solar power, etc.

When I think feral people I think a people that have retrogressed to a near wild animalistic state. Very little clothing, unkempt, elusive from us. Don't really know what you mean by feral.

Mowgliesque, as an applied definition of feral classes? (Jungle book reference) aside, I was suggesting social structures apart from modern society. I think it interesting to note the possible in that suggestion. The movie John wick, for example. in one of the movies of that series, has feral types belonging to a much larger social structure. This all took place in a larger city and seemed very well organized.

Can you give me examples?

I'm not sure how the word "feral" applies to humans. For cats and dogs, it applies to those who were once domesticated, but either escaped or were abandoned and reverted back to more "wild" ways. With humans, it's a bit more complicated, and "feral" might imply a lack of awareness or a more primitive understanding of reality which would be difficult to fathom - except in cases of those who have been extremely isolated all of their lives.

Of course, if humans are facing extreme duress and deprivation, they might naturally become more desperate and uncivilized in their behavior over the course of time.

Of course, there are some people who might try to "live off the grid" or "drop out of society" - or they might be survivalists who think there's going to be some great cataclysm which will destroy civilization.

Not really. I've noticed no organized effort among them to suggest feral aside from community involvement. Drug addiction and mental illness would be better applied to our bankers, lawyers, and to corporate America.

I still wouldn't consider any of that or them feral. More like social misfits. I should know. I'm a lifelong social misfit.
