The Etiquette of Quran Learning

And we have sent down to you the Book (Qur’an) as an exposition of everything and guidance and a Mercy and Glad Tidings for those who have surrendered (to Allah as Muslims). [Qur’an, Nahl: 89]

Quran learning is a basic requirement in Islam and while reading Quran one has also to keep in mind the division and the joining of the sentences. While learning Quran we need to utter the words clearly and slowly and read Quran in such a manner to understand the context correctly. Quran learning and understanding has a prime importance. We should not read Quran with a high speed where others cannot understand what we are reciting. The main aspect of recitation is to read Quran with understanding and thought. We should try to keep our eyes in the meanings of every verse we read.

Imam Zain al Abedeen (a.s.)
said that, “If a person wishes to converse with Allah, he should recite the Quran. When he comes to the passages where Allah addresses the people, he should say labbaek Allahumma labbaek and in the passages where Allah addresses the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W or the people of the earlier times, he should feel that the communication is for his own benefit only. When he reads about the spread of victuals of the Heaven while Quran learning, he should draw pleasure from the very thought of the delicacies. He should visualize that his Friend has made the spread for him. Sometimes Allah recounts His most superior qualities of Beneficence and Sustenance in the Quran, and at other places He talks of the unfathomable treasures of knowledge.”

It is also advised to face Kaaba while Quran learning and that one should never ever sit at the back of someone else while reciting Quran.

The Qur’an (is the) guidance for mankind and Clear Signs for the guidance and the Criterion (between right and wrong).
[Qur’an, Baqara: 185]

Our prophet Muhammad S.A.W. said that the “The best amongst you is the one who learn Quran and teaches it.”

To learn Quran there are some etiquettes which he had apply like the one who is not in the state of wudu cannot hold or touch the Holy Quran.

  • While we learn Quran we also need to sit straight facing Qibla and not to lean back.
  • Stop reading Quran when you start yawning.
  • While taking start take refuge from Allah by saying Bismillah.
  • Don’t interrupt the recitation by talking to someone unless it’s very necessary. Try to be alone while you learn Quran so that no one can disrupt you.
  • Recite clearly each word in its correct pronunciation, because each word counts ten good deeds.
  • Do not just read certain verses from various Sura’s but try to read, understand and learn Quran completely from the start.
  • Keep Quran at a higher place than other books and when you are finished with recitation, don’t leave Quran open; put it back in the shelf.
  • Don’t let a day go off without looking at the Holy Quran. Try to learn Quran regularly.
  • Don’t eat or drink during recitation.
  • Don’t throw or toss it when someone needs it, try to handle it very slightly.

While we learn Quran we also need to follow these etiquettes because it’s a very holy book for the whole human civilization from Allah and we need to give it some respect.

SOME HADITHS OF THE PROPHET (صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ)

Narrated Ibn Abbas: Regarding His (Allah's) Statement:-- 'Move not your tongue concerning (the Qur'an) to make haste therewith.' (75.16) And whenever Gabriel descended to Allah's Apostle with the Divine Inspiration, Allah's Apostle used to move his tongue and lips, and that used to be hard for him, and one could easily recognize that he was being inspired Divinely. So Allah revealed the Verse which occurs in the Surah starting with "I do swear by the Day of Resurrection.' (75.1) i.e. 'Move not your tongue concerning (the Qur'an) to make haste then with. It is for Us to collect it (in your mind) (O Muhammad) and give you the ability to recite it 'by heart.' (75.16-17) which means: It is for us to collect it (in your mind) and give you the ability to recite it by heart. And when We have recited it to you (O Muhammad) through Gabriel then follow you its recital. (75.18) means: 'When We reveal it (the Qur'an) to you, Listen to it.' for then: It is for Us to explain it and make it clear to you' (75.19) i.e. It is up to Us to explain it through your tongue. So, when Gabriel came to him, Allah's Apostle would listen to him attentively, and as soon as Gabriel left, he would recite the Revelations, as Allah had promised him.

Narrated Qatada: Anas was asked, "How was the recitation (of the Quran) of the Prophet?' He replied, "It was characterized by the prolongation of certain sounds." He then recited: In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful prolonging the pronunciation of 'In the Name of Allah, 'the most Beneficent,' and 'the Most Merciful.

WORST QAAREE

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "There will appear some people among you whose prayer will make you look down upon yours, and whose fasting will make you look down upon yours, but they will recite the Qur'an which will not exceed their throats (they will not act on it) and they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out through the game whereupon the archer would examine the arrowhead but see nothing, and look at the unfeathered arrow but see nothing, and look at the arrow feathers but see nothing, and finally he suspects to find something in the lower part of the arrow."
