IDF: Hezbollah storing massive weapons depot next to a school

Israeli military releases location of alleged arms stockpile in central Lebanese town containing huge amount of explosives, in apparent attempt to ‘name and shame’ terror group

The Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday revealed the location of an alleged Hezbollah arms cache in central Lebanon, saying a large quantity of explosives was being stored in a building across the street from a school.

According to Israeli assessments, explosives with roughly half the destructive power of the massive blast that leveled huge swaths of Beirut last year were being kept in the building in the village of Ebba.

The military refused to elaborate on the nature of the weaponry it suspected was being kept in the building.

The IDF anticipated that following its exposure of the site, Hezbollah would quickly empty the structure and move any munitions inside elsewhere.

While this would deny the military a target for attack in any future conflict, the army said it was prepared to show its hand now, signaling to Hezbollah the depth of its intelligence-gathering and exposing to the world the terror group’s apparent endangerment of children.

The IDF said it had information about “thousands” more Hezbollah targets.

The article ends ...

The village of Ebba is located in central Lebanon, in the Nabatieh region, northeast of the city of Tyre and about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Israel.

Hezbollah storing weapons there would amount to a violation of the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War and required all Lebanese armed groups besides the military to remain north of the country’s Litani River.

“We see that the Hezbollah organization, as an operational tactic, consistently uses civilian assets for military activities. On the other hand, the IDF and the Northern Command use all means available in order to reduce the harm to civilians, but at the same time, the IDF will not hesitate to strike active targets,” the military said in a statement.

UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force charged with keeping southern Lebanon free of armed Hezbollah members, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Is the IDF going to bomb Lebanese schools next, now that they have all been flagged as "Hezbollah weapons depots"?

Part of the endless war in the region is the use of propaganda. Hezbollah has a tactic of doing that so when Israel attacks they can trumpet how evil Israel is to kill children. The lives of the children don't matter, of course, when Hezbollah sets the propaganda trap.

Israeli propaganda of course emphasizes how evil the other side is while Jewish settlers take over more land "by hook or by crook".

This would be plausible if anybody cared, but the last round of Gaza bombings have shown that the West unanimously supports the IDF in these campaigns, and unanimously condemns the IDF's opponents for having the audacity to locate their bases in populated territory. At this point we know for a fact that no Western journalist and no Western politician of importance cares, or even pretends to care, how many children the IDF is killing to get at the "terrorists".

Should we consider the IDF as a trustworthy source of information for that sort of things? Intelligence reports from government hostile to Lebanon should be taken with a grain of salt. Next what? We will believe intelligence report of Iran against Israel and from Hezbollah against the IDF? I would wait for a more neutral agency or solid proofs to trust that sort of things.

I think that what ever we do - we should take this enormously complex chicken-and-egg question, and attempt to simplify it so that we can comfort ourselves with easy answers like "apartheid".

That's a very reasonable point. In this case I take it as likely that the report is accurate. But it would be very useful to have independent verification.

That's a good point, but now I'm wondering: What would be a reliable neutral agency? I'm not sure I would trust even our own intelligence agencies. Maybe the UN could send in a team to investigate?

Excellent idea. Unfortunately ...
