The best lines of poetry ever

DarkSun

Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Ulysses -- Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

And Lo, the beautiful opal, that rare and wonderous gem
Where the moon and the sun blend into one, is the child that was born to them...Ella Wheeler Wilcox

It seems kind of gay for a guy I guess, but I like the line from Everytime We Touch by Cascada:

You arms are my castle your heart is my sky;
They wipe away tears that I cry

(Cuz everytime we touch I get this feeling and everytime we kiss I reach for the sky
when I feel my heart beat so I can't let you go I need you by my side.)

Just try to get the cosmic touch,
The sense that you dont matter much.
A Million stars are in the sky;
A million planets plunge and die;
A million million men are sped;
A million million wait ahead.
Each plays his part and has his day--
What ho! the World's alright I say

Or try to get the Chemic view:
A million million lives made "You."
In lives a million you will be
Immortal down eternity;
Immortal on this earth to range,
With never death, but ever change.
You always were and will be aye---
What ho! the World's alright I say.....Robert Service.

Do song lyrics count?

If blood will flow, when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour, of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain, will wash the stains away
But something in our minds, will always stay...

On and on... the rain will fall....
On and on... the rain will fall....

Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence, and nothing ever could.
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are.

On and on, the rain will fall
Like tears from a star
(Like tears from a star).
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are
(How fragile we are).

If blood will flow, when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour, of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain, will wash the stains away
But something in our minds, will always stay...

On and on, the rain will fall
Like tears from a star
(Like tears from a star).
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are
(How fragile we are).

I actually came across this as a song on an classical music album I downloaded, and it was a lot to do with how it was sung as much as the poem itself. A little depressing, but

LET down the bars, O Death!
The tired flocks come in
Whose bleating ceases to repeat,
Whose wandering is done.

Thine is the stillest night,
Thine the securest fold;
Too near thou art for seeking thee,
Too tender to be told.

My favourite couple of lines as far as song lyrics go are

"And you thought you could change the world by opening your legs
Well it isn't very hard; try kicking them instead"

Delilah - The Dresden Dolls

Some People some people never go crazy.
me, sometimes I'll lie down behind the couch
for 3 or 4 days.
they'll find me there.
it's Cherub, they'll say, and
they pour wine down my throat
rub my chest
sprinkle me with oils.

then, I'll rise with a roar,
rant, rage -
curse them and the universe
as I send them scattering over the
lawn.
I'll feel much better,
sit down to toast and eggs,
hum a little tune,
suddenly become as lovable as a
pink
overfed whale.

some people never go crazy.
what truly horrible lives
they must lead.

"One one" was a race horse, "Two two" was one too. "One one" won one race, "Two two" won one too.

Good-bye

The saddest word in all the world-- the little word 'good-bye
For with it, lovers part in tears, hearts break, and friendships die;
In this word is gathered all the sorrow of all men
The griefs that never can be told by human tongue or pen.
Good-bye, good-bye--the enemy of life's sweet ecstasy
Transmuting love's brave rapture to a fruitless agony;
The word that haunts our silences and thrusts into the heart
The knowledge that all human things must pass, and friends must part
The word that mocks our present peace with wild unfounded fears
The melancholy plenty of too many loveless years.
Yet come what may, the mound of earth, the little marble cross
Is not the end of love's high bond--is not the final loss
For life is indestructible and love can never die
We have not said the last word when our lips have said ---Good-bye.....By Patience Strong.

Hold your head up high, for there is no greater love
Think of the faces of the people you defend
(you defend)
And promise me, they will never see the tears within our eyes
(my eyes are closed)
Although we are men, with mortal sins, angels never cry

When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude; And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

A Question

A voice said, Look me in the stars
And tell me truly, men of earth,
If all the soul-and-body scars
Were not too much to pay for birth.
