A few years ago, Bosnia and Herzegovina submitted - for the first time - a film to the American Motion Pictures Academy. It was selected as a candidate for an Oscar, and won! No Man's Land took home the top prize, a dark comedy about the war in Bosnia set in a trench on the front lines.
Sarajevo went crazy. A giant banner was hung across the main street downtown that read "Jebes zemlju koja Oskara nema!" which means, basically, "F--k the country without an Oscar!" - people were so proud.
This year, Bosnia submitted three films for consideration - and all three were accepted as candidates! The films include Grbavica, by Jasmila Zbanic, which broke hearts across Europe this year.
Mirjana Karanovic, an ethnic-Serb from Belgrade, Serbia, plays the role of a Muslim woman raped during the war. She received numerous death threats for playing this role, so that'll tell you something of her courage.
In the movie, Mirjana has hidden the truth of her daughter's birth from her. She told her daughter that her father was a Muslim solider killed defending Sarajevo. Now the little girl can go on a school trip for the children of soldiers, she just needs a simply document proving who her father was - something all the other children were easily given. Her mother, Mirjana, though - stalls. And stalls.
Eventually the truth comes out, and that's the movie. Very, very beautiful film. The other two films are Nafaka and Nebo iznad krajolika.
Woohoo! Hopefully we'll get another. How many films are put up for nomination, I believe 5 in this category? And we have three of them!
