Just an update ... a school two blocks away was also vandalised with anti-Muslim language, so the whole thing seems racist in nature. Still, most likely it is a couple of young punks showing off to each other.

Three years or so ago, these two Muslim converts attacked and killed this soldier called Lee Rigby, while he was off-duty, just in the street in London. They stood around talking to people calmly until the police showed up. This was massive international news.

Around the same time, a group of young guys attacked and killed an old Muslim man in an alleyway, as he walking home from the mosque in the evening. This was not publicised.

So it's good that this kind of bigoted sentiment IS being made clear to people, so they realise it's happening

In this particular case, I reckon it's more general bored vandalism, targeted against people who are 'other', without any real understanding that somebody's being hurt by it.

This is all just very unfortunate. :( The amount of ignorance and hate people can have continues to amaze me.

In Britain, study of Hinduism is part of the national curriculum in schools. But for a pagan like me, both our religions are part of the Sanatana dharma or Athanata eusebia, which is why my library includes the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Vedanta sutras with Ramanuja's commentary, among other things!

Topic for another thread, but how accurate is that curriculum? In America, Hinduism is generally portrayed in a negative light, as well as ridiculous inaccuracy. So 'education' is no help at all and in fact can worsen situations. I can't imagine what they say about us in the Christian private schools.

We had compulsory Religious Education for two or three years when we started secondary school (this is in the UK now), I don't recall Hinduism making an appearance. To be honest, aside from an argument about the divinity of Jesus I had with the teacher at about the age of 12, all I can remember is learning where different object were located in synagogues, and how bar mitzvahs took place. All details have admittedly gone.

EDIT: Still more diverse than primary school. There, Religious Education was about the life of Jesus. Also, History was about the life of Jesus, as I recall.

British schools are expected to be even-handed and the state and church ones generally are. I've known Hindu families send their children to church schools. The Jewish and Muslim ones are more sectarian. Here's a nice picture of London children on a visit to a Hindu temple: note the Muslims ones!

I am a Hindu whose parents sent all his children to Christian missionary school in India. Today I am devout satya-advaitist. So it only did me good to learn about a different religion early on. Plural studies therefore enhance the child's path to knowledge.

I don't know whether to cry, laugh or facepalm.

I once encountered a rather young Neo Nazi on the Bus. Being "white" I escaped his wrath and he actually tried to talk to me about some white power nonsense. I remember him boasting about how intimidating the Swastika was to people who were "not white" or whatever. It was quite amusing when a Monk of some kind, who was of Indian Descent happened to climb aboard wearing a painted on Swastika. Not sure why he was, but the Neo Nazi wasn't so boastful after that. He was still acting like a ********, though.

If it's local punks, no. The temples are 30 miles and 40 minutes apart. But if it is hate crime, then sure.

Any update on this? Have they been caught?

In some schools here, I have noticed (though very, very tiny in number) the rise of Nazi hybrid Punk Music among some kids. In the schools, they are allowed to dress anyway they like, it starts with the "gothic" look (not yet Punkbut also from UK) such as darkness genre, black llipstick on girls (which I kind of like, actually), then it moves onto UK influenced Punk Style, the Punks in UK also have racist groups and this is where the term "dot busters" started which was in the UK and not US), then the next thing they move onto "baldies" (skin heads) which definetly has Nazi stuff as they start sporting swastikas on chains or tatoos and that came from UK as well... then they start painting swastikas and "celebrating the anniversary of Hitler" (i think that is in Nov or Dec) and the next thing you have students running around doing this.

There is a RAP music element behind this as well, the RAP style with violence taken up by "White Gothic" music bands, there is even a "record" (Dvd) company selling this music which includes things like loud shouts of "Sieg Heil!" and some kids are now buying this music.

Ironically, it was Islamic Extremists who promoted the entire Nazi revival centered on Jew hate in Europe, but now these Punk-Nazi-UK thing moves into the kids in US and also targets Muslims.

I have noticed the Skin-Heads Punks in Canada way before the US... back even to the 80s. It is a problem, it starts with allowing the kids to dress up in these clothes (like a uniform it effects their minds) in schools, the next thing you know they start acting out the role.

I looked for an update on the first one, but couldn't find one. One of the things I dislike about press is they often don't do updates. The second one only happened a day ago, so I don't see why there would be an update . Cameras are being installed though. That's 10 000 unnecessary dollars.

I'm sure they regret these moments of unthinking immaturity.
