The reason why the U. S. is an aspirational society, can be seen by how people viewed T. V. in the past. CNN is great, but news became important after the Gulf War. The U. S. has been a society as isolated, as any other. They watched HBO, perhaps, if HBO is an old channel, and pursued similar interests in life. They did not have the time or inclination to know about other things. In India, when T. V. made it's appearance, somehow, people felt that T. V., is entertainment, and the national T. V. service, Doordarshan, is entertainment as viewed and enforced by the government. U. S., is consumerist, and importantly was in the past, because they wanted to, and spent considerable time and effort to do so. The world saw this, and felt, there seems to be no other way for greatness for a nation, because though they weren't consumerist, and couldn't be materialist, not having resources, the U. S. was enjoying materialism, and found greatness in it. The world also it seems embraced materialism, and the U. S. has less freedom to do so, because of less resources at disposal, for every consumerist society.
