This is a summary of the history of RF, the landmarks in its history, some of the most prominent members thereof, and the most important transitions that the forum has gone through over the years.

This summary was written by the RF administration. Furthermore, this summary is subject to future expansion and editing at the administration's discretion.

• Rex founded RF in 2004 while still in college. He was 22 at the time he founded the forum with the vision of creating a community where people of diverse beliefs could discuss, compare, and debate religion, politics, and philosophy.

• Some of the first admins of the forum were @Pah, @Green Gaia, @Sunstone, @michel, and, obviously, the owner, @Rex. @Todd was also a super administrator, having been one of the owners of the forum. He stepped down when the forum was sold to Advameg, Inc. in late 2007.

• Some of the first staff members in the forum's history were @Runt, @Master Vigil, and @Mr Spinkles. With a join date on March 25, 2004 and an account registration number of 55 (meaning that he was the 55th account in the forum's history), Mr Spinkles remains the longest-standing non-staff member to have logged in to RF in 2015.

• In late 2007, the forum was sold to Advameg, Inc., causing many members, including some staff members, to quit the forums and cause turmoil on their way out. The disturbance continued for months, culminating with the banning of several members, including a few staff members, and the departure of several long-term members in protest.

Some Prominent Staff Members in RF History
• The founder of RF and first-ever RF member, @Rex was responsible for kick-starting the entire RF community. He bought RF again in late 2014, effectively making him the longest-standing member and staff member in RF history when he returned to activity in 2014.

• Thanks to her wise and competent leadership, @Green Gaia became the second admin in RF history and helped transform the forum into what it is today: a community of diverse beliefs, both religious and non-religious. Her tenure as an admin left a footprint on RF that is still in effect to this day.

• Before his departure in 2015, @Sunstone was one of the longest-standing members and staff members on RF, having been a member for 11 years at the time. Some of his staff decisions included promoting @MysticSang'ha, @Mister_T, and @Quagmire to administrator positions, and working with then-tech assistant @markablue to help run the forum. Arguably the most impactful change he made to the staff procedures was enacting the three-vote consensus system that the RF staff still follows to this day, whereby taking any action requires the agreement of at least three staff members.

• Two of the first members to hold the title of administrator after @Rex, @michel, and @Sunstone, @MysticSang'ha and @Mister_T are the two most long-standing admins on RF as of this moment, having been promoted in 2008, over 7 years ago. They are among the members with the most posts on RF. Their Ninjas vs. Pirates inside joke contributed to a lighthearted, cheerful atmosphere throughout the forum. Their inside joke was integrated into a series of web comics created by then-forum member @mrscardero.

• Being the most active and hardest-working staff member in RF history, @Quagmire remains the staff member with the most longevity on RF, only taking few-week breaks since he was hired as a staff member shortly after his arrival on the forum. During some of his tenure as an administrator of RF, he was the only active admin for months at a time, carrying the load of running the entire forum more than once in his time as a forum administrator. He witnessed the change in the ownership of the forum in 2007 and oversaw the rewriting of the rules in 2011. He has also gotten involved in nearly all of the processes of hiring staff members since he became an administrator in 2009.

• Having been RF's best technical administrator at one point, @Panda's contributions to the forum have left a footprint that is impossible to remove. In addition to his contributions to the staff, he has also contributed great value to the other parts of the forum, with over 10,000 posts to his name.

• Hired as a staff member in 2007 only a few months after his arrival on RF, @9-10ths_Penguin is currently one of the most long-standing staff members. He was promoted to administrator in 2010, a position from which he stepped down in 2013. With nearly 40,000 posts, he is also one of the most active members on the forum. He is one of the members with the most longevity on RF.

• Having been the most active staff members at one point on RF, particularly between 2011 and 2012, @Reverend Rick, @Badran, @Penumbra, and @ssainhu's contributions to the forum still have an effect to this day. Some of their achievements include handling the most reports out of all staff members at one point, helping to rewrite the rules, and being promoted to administrator positions in early 2012. @Badran and @Penumbra retired after serving the forum for about 4 years.

• One of the hardest-working staff members on the forum, @Debater Slayer has dealt with the most reports out of any staff member in RF history, second only to @Quagmire. He was the fastest-ever member to hold the title of administrator, having been promoted to the position a mere 8 months after his arrival on the staff. He was also the youngest person to hold the title, having been 18 at the time of his promotion. Under his tenure, the representation of women in the RF administration has increased by two thirds, and the representation of women in the RF staff (excluding inactive and retired staff members) has increased by 100%. A total of 5 female members have been hired as staff under his tenure, all at his recommendation.

@Madhuri, one of the longest-standing staff members on the forum, remains a strong voice for Hinduism on RF. She is one of the staff members who have dealt with the most reports in RF history. Due to her contributions to the staff and her hard work, she was promoted to join the RF administration in early 2014.

• Being the most recent addition to the administration of RF, @Quintessence is currently one of the hardest-working staff members on RF. Some of her ongoing achievements include writing the newest edition of the moderator handbook, modifying the text of the forum rules, and completely rewriting the moderation notification private message templates.

• Having been a huge influence on making the forum more friendly and humorous and less formal, @Feathers in Hair helped set the tone for RF for years to come, making the forum's community more tight-knit and boosting the sense of fellowship on RF.

• As one of RF's most senior staff members, @Mister Emu is an example of persistence and consistency on the forum. A member since the forum's first year, he is also one of the most senior active members on RF.

@Circle_One, a witness of the Advameg, Inc. era, was present during the fallout of the change in ownership of the forum in late 2007. She is one of the longest-standing forum members, both as a staff member and a regular one.

• One of the longest-standing staff members on RF, @angellous_evangellous remains a cornerstone in RF history. He was banned by a dissenting moderator during the fallout of the 2007 buyout of RF by Advameg, Inc. He is one of the few RF staff members to hold a doctorate, if not the only one.

@TashaN, another one of RF's longest-standing staff members, has witnessed the change of ownership of the forum in 2007, the overhauling of the staff more than once, and the change in the ownership of RF again in 2014. He has tutored more than one moderator during his career as a staff member, cementing his status as one of RF's most valuable members, both on and away from the staff.

• One of the longest-standing RF members as well as one of the most active members on the RF staff, @ChristineES remains a valuable contributor to the forum. She is possibly the Christian with the most longevity on RF, representing her faith on the forum for nearly a decade.

• Having joined RF in early 2008, @Riverwolf is one of the forum's most experienced moderators. He has over 24,000 posts, making him one of the most active posters in addition to his contributions to the staff. His partner, @MoonWater, is also a moderator on RF.

• A valuable contributor over the years both to the RF staff and the forum in general, @Caladan has remained a voice for his secular Jewish beliefs for nearly 6 years on the forum. Many of his contributions center around his deep-rooted knowledge about archaeology, Hebrew scriptures, and Middle Eastern history.

• Excluding certain administrators, @LuisDantas is currently the active staff member with the most longevity on the forum. With over 28,000 posts, he is also one of the most prolific posters in the history of RF. He remains a valuable contributor to RF nearly 6 years after his registration on the forum.

• Having been the single most active staff member on RF at one point, @tumbleweed41 handled the most reports out of any other staff member during his tenure as a staff member. He left the forum in 2014 after over two years of serving it.

• With over 13,000 posts, @Thorbjorn is one of the most active contributors to the forum. His tolerance and excellent fellowship have led to his being hired as a staff member. He has represented Hinduism and Paganism at different points during his membership on the forum.

• Being one of the most active staff members in RF history, @4consideration has remained one of the cornerstones of the RF staff since she was hired in 2013. Before joining the staff, she had been known for her participation in humorous threads and her lighthearted posts, earning the Shield of the Jester award before the 2014 forum software transition.

Miscellaneous Facts About RF
• A few romances have shaped up through RF. Some RF romances include @dawny0826 and @Father Heathen, @Treks and @Quaxotic, @Songbird and @doppelganger, and @well named and @Orbit.

@dawny0826 and @Father Heathen are a married couple now, and @well named and @Orbit are going to marry soon, with @Windwalker being the one who will perform the ceremony.

• Some members of RF have met each other offline:
• RF has a radio show called Radio RF created and run by @DreadFish and @Iti oj. Links to the episodes can be found here.

• The RF staff is made up of volunteers from different continents and of different religious and non-religious backgrounds. There are staff members from the U.S., Canada, Europe, the UK, Australia, South America, and the Middle East. There are also atheist, unaffiliated theist, Pagan, Hindu, Buddhist, Left-Hand Path, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim staff members.

• RF used to run on vBulletin forum software until late 2014, when it moved to XenForo software instead.

• RF has over 45,000 members.

• RF has an Amish DIR.

• There are 17 members of the RF administration, including 7 retired administrators. The oldest is @michel, aged 66, and the youngest is @Debater Slayer, aged 20.

• The current most senior active member of RF is @Terrywoodenpic, aged 80.

• The most new posts in one month in RF history were in January 2015, numbered at 57,128, while the most new threads in one month in RF history were in August 2005, numbered at 1,804 threads.

• The most new posts in one day in RF history were on January 8 2015, numbered at 2,453 posts, while the most new threads in one day in RF history were on March 25, 2007, numbered at 342 threads.

• The number of posts made in the entire first year of the forum's history, 2004, was 66,961, only 9,833 more than the number of posts made in the single month of January 2015.

• Before the forum's software transition from vBulletin to XenForo, likes were called frubals. Members could leave a comment to accompany a frubal, and no one except the receiving member could see who frubaled their post and how many frubals their post had gotten.

• Due to the way frubal points worked at one point, a frubal had more value the more frubals the giving member had, which meant that the members with the most frubals on the forum had the ability to significantly increase the frubal count of other members. This led to a frubal inflation during which one frubal from certain members was worth thousands of frubal points. The main cause of the frubal inflation was a thread titled Frubal Orgy where members freely exchanged frubals. The thread can be found here. The value of the frubals from all members was scaled down to a 1:1 ratio, and the frubal count of individual members was adjusted accordingly in a project led by @Quagmire.

• Before the forum's software transition, members had color-coded usernames based on which user group they belonged to: theists' usernames were purple, non-theists' were orange, moderators' were brown, super moderators' were blue, and administrators' were red.

• The two glomp or running hug smileys, :glomp: and :glomp2:, were added to the forum by @Debater Slayer.

In @Quagmire's graphic novel in the making, centered around the talking monkey Naykidape, two of the characters are based on RF members.

• A member of RF, @David1967, gifted premium membership to a fellow member, @Godobeyer, in a display of the spirit of fellowship that RF strives to maintain and promote.

Wow, that's a very thorough history. Nice work, DS and team.

I have a question! *jumps up and down waving her arm in the air*

Why did the sale of RF 2007 create such a stir?

This is a very comprehensive history - I did not know quite a bit of it before. It's clear you put a lot of effort into this.

I have a question! *jumps up and down waving her arm in the air*

Why did the sale of RF 2007 create such a stir?

From what I have read in the records, it was a combination of distrust toward the new owners and refusal to cooperate with them. Tension erupted as a result, and certain people didn't handle the differences well at all. They ended up doing the equivalent of "ragequitting," as gamers call it, and they caused a lot of trouble on their way out.

That was before my time, though, so an older staff member like @MysticSang'ha or @Quagmire could give you a more comprehensive answer.

Harrumph!
Saying I "collect old machine parts" is like saying the Getty Museum exhibits "old picture frames".
But no worries....I'm pleased just to not have been banned....yet.

Dang...I wish I'd seen all the 2007 drama.
(I was busy at another forum's drama back then.)

Well, RF changed with new ownership. Think about how much the forums changed in 2014 and as a result, membership changed during the move last year to this most recent interface....and then multiply it by 600 kajillion to compare it to the sale and the resulting changes in 2007. :D

RF had already been growing, and Todd being the owner at the time, felt overwhelmed with his own real life responsibilities and didn't know anybody who would buy it from him. Advameg saw an opportunity for revenue given how RF had already grown from 2004-07 and bought it from him. I was a new mod back then that had JUST finished training (I was still probationary, I think). The additional focus of finding revenue generation with a forum that had been seen as a refuge for the small-but-growing family of members had RF feeling as if people needed to choose a side.

Lots of members feeling hurt at the time. Many members here remember that time as being particularly difficult emotionally.

More history, albeit of little significance to outside of us refugees from The History Channel.
(Trivia: It was wryly known as "The Hitler Channel" because of its programming predilections.)
When THC shut down their discussion forums, many of us came here.....
@Wirey
@Awoon

MurphTheSurf

@sojourner
I'm sure there are more, but memory & competence fail me.

Aye, it's of particular benefit to us newbies who wonder just what we stepped into.

Suggestion....
Cover the history of frubals becoming <likes>.
Long, long ago...in a forum far far away, we had frubal orgies.
(I was never invited. Drat! Was it something I wore? Or didn't wear under what I wore?)
Frubal inflation caused a crash in frubal value, inspiring a reset.

No offense DS, but a true RF histogram would include at least a cursory mention of the Frubal Inflation.

Also, you forgot the part where dust1n came and changed everything.

I expect the 2nd draft to be better.

Its okay. I recognize my name has reached some point of reverence here, like a holy chalice or an anointed painting. You can respectfully acknowledge me with a polite nod, but it's truly in bad taste to call too much attention to it. No wants to see RF brag.
