This got the police to investigate a student who said that....

Students in Louisiana thought this math symbol looked like a gun. Police were called

I predict that to avoid triggering students & cops,
that the top bar will be removed. (That's been
done before.)

Over-reacting to silly things shows that they care...unlike in Florida.

I saw this elsewhere and the OP article isn’t really as clear as it could have been about the sequence of events (and has a broken link to the Sheriff’s Facebook page). This article, which was linked on that Facebook page, gives a better idea. Basically the first the Sheriff’s Office heard about it was a rumour of a direct threat to shoot up the school. It was only after they investigated that they found out it had all started with the talk about the symbol. Unfortunately, it makes for a much more clickable story if the hacks make you think a student was investigated just for saying the square root symbol looks like a gun. :(

Oberlin student cleared by law enforcement still banned from school

When the history of this era is written it will be called the "age of madness" - I think I'm ripping off Heinlein with that.

Cops blast man after he helped stop possible church shooting
Beware cops....they're in the business of shooting people.
Anyone will do.
Police officer’s shot misses dog, injures girl in home
They're trained to keep their finger on the trigger.
A sneeze....a backfire....you name it, & it goes off.

I think we're all missing the point.

This is not an issue of gun fear and hysteria, it's an issue of how uneducated these Lousiana students seem to be. . . They clearly could not recognize a common mathematical symbol that they should have learned in 5th grade.

This is is a story about stupidity, not excessive fear.

Not saying this is a backwater town, but it sure has a lot of the signs.

"Downtown Oberlin Louisiana"

"As of the census of 2000, there were 1,853 people,

The median income for a household in the town was $23,333,

25.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.3% of those under age 18"

"Poverty line? Ain't that the fence we put up between my shack and yours?"

All of which I think goes into explaining their ignorance of

I grew up in a smaller more backwatery town, & we learnt our guzintas & square roots.
We rural folk were better edumacated than inner city kids.
