Songs and albums for tough times.

I'm intending this thread to be a place where we share music that we favored during hardships. Feel free to share lyrics or whatever thoughts you have about it.

Right now, I'm listening to a song that I listened to a ton when I was all alone, abandoned by my best friend at the time (who doesn't even live in this country and I've never met in person) and not talking to my one relative who I had contact with, besides my mom, when my mother was dying from pancreatic cancer, we lived in a veritable slum and my life was basically falling apart, as it's been since then.

Anyway, this was my favorite song from that album, which I did and still do listen to over and over because I relate to the lyrics:

"[Verse 1]
It’s everyday that I can’t close my eyes
It’s everyday it seems I’m asking why
You had to leave me wishing every time
When I sleep you’ll be somewhere far away from me

[Pre-Chorus]
Sinking, I’m falling through
Lost in the depths of time
Silence enfolds me
Cut up and left behind

[Chorus]
You were the light in the dark
You were the end from the start
Like waves in the ocean you bury me
We in this moment depart
Replacing all that we are
A symphony of broken dreams

[Verse 2]
You couldn’t mean it if you even tried
You couldn’t see it, now it’s do or die
I found the meaning when I said goodbye
Between misery and despair
Motionless in fear

[Pre-Chorus]
Sinking, I’m falling through
Lost in the depths of time. Silence enfolds me
I’m lost in the depths of time
Cut up and left behind

[Chorus]
You were the light in the dark
You were the end from the start
Like waves in the ocean you bury me
We in this moment depart
Replacing all that we are
A symphony of broken dreams

[Chorus]
You were the light in the dark
You were the end from the start
Like waves in the ocean you bury me
We in this moment depart
Replacing all that we are
A symphony of broken dreams

[Bridge]
I’ve made my mistakes
My life on the strings
Composing a symphony of broken dreams
I’ve lost all my faith, my humanity
Composing a symphony of broken dreams

[Chorus]
You were the light in the dark
You were the end from the start
Like waves in the ocean you bury me
We in this moment depart
Replacing all that we are
A symphony of broken dreams

[Chorus]
You were the light in the dark
You were the end from the start
Like waves in the ocean you bury me
We in this moment depart
Replacing all that we are
A symphony of broken dreams

[Outro]
A symphony of broken dreams
A symphony of broken dreams"

This. Every single time. The fact that it was inspired by band members' homesickness makes it hit even closer to home for me.

This was one from when I was younger.

This one's stuck with my most of my life...

This one did wonders for releasing anger, but only if I sang along....;)
I love Slipknot's first two albums. I saw them live in 2003. The floor of the venue was covered in an inch of muck and slippery for some reason. Too much sweat and beer spilled, I guess.

Layne Staley was a great singer, too.

I always loved those albums, too...

I'm not surprised about the floor. Sounds about right.

Layne was awesome...and him and Cantrell were such a good vocal match.

So...this is a weird one, I'll grant you, but...

Secret Samadhi, by Live.

There's a backstory, though (sorry!)
After I finished Uni, I moved to a remote part of Papua New Guinea, working as a teacher for a logging company.
I knew nobody, and was the only single guy amongst the management group.
There was no tv. No radio. Cetainly no internet. No phone coverage. It was dangerous to be out at night. Etc, etc.

My stuff took several weeks to arrive, so for the first few weeks I literally had a small amount of school supplies, and the clothes I took on the plane.
This included a cd player, and a copy of Secret Samadhi I'd grabbed at the airport, which was new out at the time.

Combine it with a couple of books I had on me, and that cd had to protect my sanity for a few weeks while I adjusted to life in an extremely remote location, and wait for the rest of my stuff (including books and cds) to arrive.
So it's not so much the music itself, or the lyrics...it's more just how important having any music at all was to me for a couple of weeks there.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I'm a Roger Daltrey fan.

I like this masterpiece....

Reminds me of the tough days in the Military.

Alice give us the most cheery songs. Layne seems to be presaging his own death in Nutshell.

Yeah, that's what we thought, too...

And I think its probably not a coincidence that the last song on the last album he put out with them was 'Over Now'(which, of course, starts out by playing 'Taps').

George Michael...."Praying for Time"....

This has been a favorite of mine for a long time...still as meaningful today as when he wrote it....

Aštra’el

Aštara, Blade of Aštoreth
Sometimes, in the midst of all the chaos... it’s like time is frozen, and a person has a moment where they can’t help but remember a time long ago when they were truly happy, when they were just an innocent child who could smile and laugh with the people they loved, and knew nothing of the world... before tragically returning to reality and facing the harsh, cruel world as it is, with no other choice but to keep moving forward and embrace the horrible monster they’ve become, on their own.

Vogel im Kafig (The Rumbling) Epic Catastrophic Version

“...Mit Trauer und Entscheidung im Herzen
zeigen wir den Willen weiterzugehen
Niemand darf eigensinnig
seines Lebens beraubt werden...”
