What is so special about the "TV Tropes" website?

It's a remarkably popular website for investigating various common themes, symbols, and character traits in popular fiction of all sorts, and even in real life. I've spent hours browsing through it at random.

Many of their names for certain tropes have begun to work their way into common speech as well.

I've been keeping up with Bryson's alternate history, and it is quite worth reading, if you have several hours spared. The first part is currently completed, and I am eagerly awaiting the second installment.
