    It's begun.

India Walton Could Become The First Socialist Mayor Of A Major U.S. City In Decades

India Walton stuns longtime incumbent in Buffalo mayoral primary.

I feel bad for everyone living there , and maintain that you get and deserve who you vote for.

She upseated Byron Brown, a four term mayor, who for a Democrat, didn't do, to a larger degree, that bad of a job in the city.

    Yes, I complemented a Democrat*.

Not that Buffalo was all that great of a city to begin with, now it's going to decline to a new low.

Just watch and learn exactly what a socialist will do to the place, and its municipal budget after the spending skyrockets.

Let's see if I'm wrong down the road.

I keep waiting for all this terrible stuff to happen as the result of America electing socialists, such as free healthcare and universal basic income and monthly stimulus checks and student debt cancellation and taxing the rich. But I never get delivered the fruits I'm promised by the other side.

She hasn't been officially elected yet, although it appears that the Democratic primary is the real election in Buffalo, since no Republican is even bothering to run.

On the other side of the state, Curtis Sliwa won the Republican nomination for the NYC mayoral election. It doesn't seem a Republican would have a snowball's chance in Hades of winning in NYC, but I guess stranger things have happened.

The last socialist mayor of a major American city did a good job and was re-elected three times (he served from 1948 to 1960). I don't see why you have all this doom and gloom about such an election. There has and still are dozens of socialist mayors and politicians, up to the highest echelons, in first world countries and most of them are doing a fine job. It seems to me that you are very prejudiced.

The knee jerk reaction to 'socialist' is funny. I'm collecting 'Social Security' and am using 'Medicare'. Quite happy with these 'socialist' programs.

A mayor has only so much power.
I don't think we'll see government taking ownership of the means of production.

Ooo, it's that terrible word "socialist". Everyone run and hide under your beds stroking your AR-15's and asking them to protect you.

Do you still live in the 80s red scare?
I swear every other day I hear of our neighbours New Zealand absolutely kicking our *** in terms of economics or human rights because of some socialist policy they’ve implemented.
I dunno what to tell you. I’ve spent my life listening to the US claim that policies implemented in literally all of the rest of the West (including my own country) are evil socialist nonsense set to destroy us all.
Yet to be destroyed over here.
Maybe join the rest of the world in 2021 over here. Granted it’s not the best year, I’ll give you that. But at least we’ve got streaming services

Did she announce that she was going to confiscate capital and distribute it among the working class, or are we talking about "socialism" along the lines of "publically funded infrastructure and healthcare are good, actually"?

You are starting to remind me of my old church, where everything that wasn't solidly prudishly conservative Christian was of the devil, and the devil was gaining a stronger grip on the world, the devil is taking over, and the devil is going to keep making things worse and destroy everything good and everything we love.

Hell yeah. I'm a leftist so obviously I'm happy to see more leftist. Though to be honest I haven't researched her a lot and haven't heard of her before today. So my mind may change. But I've read up a bit on her plans and I do like them. I don't live in Buffalo so I get to watch from afar. Though I'm sure she will be fought tooth and nail in every direction because the worst fear of republicans and millionaires is a successful socialist run.

They're more capitalist than we are.
Perhaps I sensed that when I chose Canuckistan
as my place to flee the draft back in the day.

We will see, but I'm sure it will most likely be a policy of "robbing Peter to pay Paul" or "using other people's money".

I suspect she will start a lot of new funding projects for which I predict she will be assailed as a hero and a champion of all mayor's and for awhile, I think things will go spiffingly well as long as the present city budget holds out.

This at first will be fine. That is, until the budget runs thin for which she will do what all NYS mayor's do. Take the trip to Albany to beg for money in addition to all other 'revenue generating policy's that come to mind.

I expect additional ordinances at the expense of personal and economic freedom to surface with of course, revenue generating qualities down the road.

In the end, as all failed policy goes, the talk of bankruptcy and a ruined credit rating.

    Like Greece and Venezuela.

The mentality follows even after a shift in one's allegiances and associations, or belief systems. The old saying comes to mind, 'you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy'. Black and white, us vs. them lenses are brought with them into the new belief structures and group identities, i.e, "He's not a True Republican, because he believes in the climate change hoax". A whole thread could be devoted to that as a topic. It's very common.

What policy do you take issue with that she's presented? Which policy was the "socialist" one?
