New York, California get 'aggressive' when residents try to flee high taxes

The Socialists will continue to pursue you to further tax and grab money out of your wallet , even if you're permanently out of the people's state.

Moral of the story , don't move here. If you are already here and want to escape the People's Republic, keep records and best of luck.

Keep your hard-earned money out of the grimy hands of the Democrat Socialists.

Ah yes, the practice of dodging your taxes is perfectly legal, and anyone who disagrees should be put down like the dogs they are.

In the article you linked above, there was another link which showed a comparison and ranking among all the states, not just in total tax burden, but compares by property tax burden, sales/excise tax, and individual income tax.

    2019’s Tax Burden by State

New York in in first place as the highest individual income tax rate, and the sixth highest property taxes. However, for sales and excise taxes, they're in 21st place.

Interestingly, New Hampshire has one of the lower overall tax burdens (46th place overall), although they have the highest property tax rates.

Hawaii has the highest rate of sales and excise taxes, with Nevada and Washington coming in at number 2 and 3 - although those two states don't have income taxes. They seem to make it up by heavier collection of sales taxes.

I'm still paying less in taxes here than I was in Indiana. And I also get way more for my taxes here. And better benefits and wages to boot.
And, how exactly is it aggressive and making it hard for people to move by verifying they are living where they say they are? Something about that Conservative mantra "if you have nothing to hide?"

California and New York were specifically mentioned in the O.P. also add Hawaii to that list, what do these three states have in common?

New Jersey was mentioned too. The worst thing I faced moving from there was the toll to get over the damn bridge.

And CA does not do badly at all on this best/worst states list https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings

MA is #8, CA is #19, NY is #25 and TX is #38. And, oh yes, the bottom few are occupied by red states.

Compared to Indiana, anywhere I've looked at in California is teeming with jobs.

This isn’t about people who move entirely and permanently, its’ about people with multiple residences who claim a different one as their primary residence for tax purposes. Given this is an all-too common method for tax evasion, it’s perfectly legitimate for the relevant authorities to require confirmation of your status. They do exactly the same thing if you claim any other relevant change of circumstances, regardless of which state you’re in.

It’s perfectly possible that tax authorities go further than they should in some cases but it should be noted that this complaint is coming from a tax accountant, who has a vested interest in pushing back as far as they can the other way so they can make as much money as possible for, and therefore from, their clients.

Incidentally, what is your opinion of the long-established system of US citizens living entirely abroad still being required to file and pay federal taxes on any income the government deems related to the US? That feels even more pervasive that the state actions being mentioned here.

I wonder if SF CA has so many vacant jobs because living there is so spendy?
That would make it difficult to attract workers.

When Sweden's Minister of Finance was asked what lead to Sweden's economic recovery in the latter half of the 1990's, he said it in two words: "Higher taxes". To a honest economist, this makes sense, but to so many on the right there seems to be this mistaken belief that tax money floats into mid-air never to be seen again.

The most significant growth here in the States over the most recent decades is in the big cities and their suburbs as that's where most new businesses are locating, especially the larger ones. Smaller towns are gradually going down economically.

Also, remember the adage "Ya don't get something for nothing"? If we want our cities to be more livable, logically we have to invest in them. If we don't, that's like expecting a return from the stock-market even though we didn't invest in it.

Those selfish so and sos? It's outrageous that they get a vote, so it's important every discouragement is offered for them not to ─ like, say, a sense of helplessness, or a debilitating despair.

It is the 6th largest economic sovereignty internationally, which goes to show us that higher taxes just doesn't work. ;)

Doubtful, as many live in the San Joaquin Valley to live cheap and travel to LA or SF to make big city money.
A better explanation is that there are tons of new businesses and their buildings being constructed as I type this. And that's going on throughout the state.

It's not NYC spendy, but it's far from cheap.
