I had the misfortune to be an illegal immigrant in the past.
Some people don't like people coming to their country to claim welfare, some people don't like people coming to do badly paid jobs.
I suppose to some minds if you're unlucky enough to be born somewhere with limited economic opportunities you deserve everything you get?
    Fair play to the protesters.

Whatever happened to "bring us your huddled masses"? Why are there so many illegal immigrants? Is the processing of applications too slow? Are the rules unnecessarily complex and burdensome?

Sorry if these questions should get another thread....

It takes years to get into the States, and lots of savings. It doesn't help that we have our hand in Latin American soil all the time, backing dictators and military juntas if a country decides to stop paying for our corporations.

What part of "illegal" do people not understand?

I heard a little about what the conditions were for these illegals in those plants. 13 year olds working 17 hour shifts? And people call pro immigration law supporters non compassionate? Supporting illegal immigration is akin to being a slaver. Had these people been legal they would have had all the rights of a regular worker with full excess to labor laws.

This "problem" is as old as the nation itself. It used to be the Irish, now it's the Mexicans.

Somehow, we not only survived, but thrived.

But is was much harder for the Irish to come here illegally. They had the Atlantic to cross. The Mexicans have a large frontier border to deal with, even with the desert problems or the Rio Grande.

Most Irish had to come legally. They did not have much of a choice. The hispanics on the other hand have "overcontinental overload". This is also not about bigotry against immigration. It is about illegal immigration. Mexico is exporting its scumbags that commit crime along with the impoverished who are otherwise peaceful. Immigration needs to be changed to allow the otherwise peaceful people to come, but kick the asses out and keep out the criminal element as much as possible.

    We agree, so far.

I also think we need to look at the effect our trade policies have in fostering this problem.

Isn't the whole purpose of having borders to keep people out? I mean, we don't want to end up like Europe, do we? We'd have to change our name to the United Countries of the Americas or something like that. :D

But seriously, the INS (or whatever it's called these days) needs a complete overhaul.

I agree. There are many who want to come here legally. They want the American Dream without looking over their shoulder. They have put everything on the line to obey the law. They deserve our first attention to come in.

We need to secure our borders to keep our nation secure and healthy. We cannot have unregulated illegal immigration. It will destroy our economy. We need to make it easier for those who want to come to America and participate in our society and be apart of the American Dream. We want to take the tired, poor, and huddled masses who want freedom. But all must be done in law and order, not chaos. We can do this, but we need to have secure borders and people here that will obey the laws of the United States, period. There is no Mexican law or European socialism here. We are Americans and those who want to be a apart of our nation need to learn our ways, language, and culture for thier own benefit as well as ours. We can no longer pander to the disorganized Latin American nations who export their criminals and poor. We need to tell them we are the USA and we will decide who can come and who cannot. If you are in our nation illegaly then you are deported, unless you can demonstrate you ended up here not of your own free will(children of illegal adults). If you are a criminal you are deported. If you are caught a second time you face a firing squad. I may sound tough, but tough is what we need tempered with compassion to get through this crisis.

I think we're deporting the wrong group of people.

    Tempered with compassion?

I suppose conservatives of such caliber would be the experts on raping and pillaging land and it's inhabitants. People are coming here illegally out of desperation and you're advocating shooting them? Please spare me your "compassion."

At one point it was illegal to not follow Jim Crow laws. Protesters, including Mister King, purposely broke these laws. The fact something exists on the books is no reason to abide by it.

Um, yeah. You can break any law you want. But you suffer through the consequences until society decides to change them (or not).

I can't help but roll my eyes when I hear people's sudden concern for "laws" being upheld. Seems like a rather "selective" concern.

Somehow I doubt that if methods used by illegal immigrants to cross the border were made "legal," that it would change anti-immigration supporters opinion of them.

Actually, America is a very easy country to legally immigrate to. Sure it may take awhile, but even those who aren't legal citizens can legally be here.

It's estimated that there are far more illegal Canadian immigrants than Mexican. For many, I suspect it's nothing more than racism. I myself though believe that every illegal immigrant should be deported, and presented the legal methods of immigration, provided the immigrant is eligible.
