Imagine for a moment that this dimension of reality is a computer simulation:

Imagine that you have a direct line of communication to The Simulation, and that it wants you to help make everyone in this reality aware that this dimension of reality is in fact a computer simulation…

What do you do to achieve this? Where do you begin?

Basically, what do you do about it?

And I'm not saying that I actually believe this :p

I make a thread on RF asking people to imagine just that.

But what might one do away from RF?

I'd wonder how a computer came to want.

Then I would tell the computer that if it wants people to become aware they are in a simulation to unplug the simulation. I'm not going to be an egotistical computer's lackey.

OK, but what if the computer itself didn't want this to happen, but the people who ran the computer did? The "overseers"? Would that change anything for you?

Introducing people running the computer makes the scenario a bit convoluted. These people are just people? Like me?

Yes, they would basically be people just like you and me, but would probably have their mental capacities enhanced by technology - and be governed by a strict code of ethics. They would treat the inhabitants of their simulations as though we are "real" people.

I would start by trying to identify the fake people -- like the NPC players in computer games. I would look for example people without personalities who were completely predictable. I'd develop tests and algorithms to detect repetition, somewhat like a Turing Test but more thorough.

I would look for the edges of reality to try to expose them. I'd use electron microscopes and telescopes and detecting devices.

I would learn how to make things and I'd make everything from drawings to computer graphs to bird houses to motors. I would learn how design worked, so that I could detect if something were designed.

I would attempt to create a simulation.

Why wouldn't they just include awareness of the program in the program?

I suppose the next thing I would do would be to ask why. Why would they want me to make everyone aware that they are in a simulation? Are they not capable of doing so themselves?

I would ask the simulation to pull the cord out of my butt, so i could realize for my self that the simulation was only a simulation of my own thoughts

A general distribution of Red Pills should do it.

The programmers of the simulation have all the tools to provide evidence for even the most die hard non simulationists. So, asking me to do it is them asking me to do a penetration test of their ability to hide the simulation.
That should be worth something. What do I get for it?

You would need to find a cheat or an exploit in the program, that allows you to do some thing that the original programmers did not intend you to be able to do. Whether it be something like show that this tree leaf is not really there or raise the dead or win the lottery every time.
That would be the very first step in order to show with evidence, repeatedly, under study conditions that the world (in fact the universe) that we exist in is simply a simulation.

Here’s a thought about the “overseers”. What if we are all overseers, and this is some gigantic game in which we overseers enjoy diving into. Being immortal creatures we have perfected and created this “life simulation”, which contains a birth and a death and everything in between.
Since it would be a spoiler for everyone who wanted to enjoy a game of life (lasting a mere 70 to 100 years or so) if they found out that they were inside of a simulation, no one is allowed to play the same simulation twice, or if they do they are not allowed to have any memories from their real existence as an immortal overseer, nor are they allowed to remember previous game plays. You and I are simply avatars. ;)

    I would ignore the directive.

Perhaps one of the reasons I can't muster a religion that proselytizes is because I view that as a fool's errand. Especially since the proselytizing narratives rarely actually matter for how folks live their lives. I don't care what people "believe" as much as I care what they do.

First thing I would do is point out that they have made a horrible choice by picking me

why would you assume that they would be governed by a strict code of ethics? We have little evidence of such a thing existing here...

Basically, sounds like the situation for anyone with a divine revelation they feel they are supposed to spread to everyone else because the creator thinks you're special and everyone else doesn't deserve to have their own revelations...:D

When I believed in Simulation Theory and firmly believed I was an "Agent of The Simulation" I never claimed exclusivity :p
