Should DNA testing be required when a child is born?

There are some conniving people in this world who have children just to get money from men but I thought the following video resonates with a lot of men who are paying child support for children that aren't related to them.

I actually feel for the guy's anger in the following video:

    Thoughts?

I don't think the government should be involved with this especially for all couples.

It should be involved only where there's a claim for child support if at all.

It sounded as if the man in the video was paying child support.

Who pays the child support of a child when the husband or even the regular boyfriend is not the father?

What happens if a man were to finally find out his ex-girlfriend's 17-year-old teenage son, whom the man believed was his biological offspring and for whom he was financially supporting with 17 years of child support payments, turns out not to actually be his offspring?

Women, just like men, cheat sometimes. The problem is women can get pregnant and sometime stick a poor sap with the bill. The problem is that judges often feel it is not right to harm the child so if child support has been going on for a while the "father" may be stuck paying it until the kid is 18.

A cautionary tale for guys. The fact is that the world is not perfect. There are times that women get the short end of the stick and this is one way that men can suffer.

As to the question the OP asked, if you are not married, get a paternity test for sure. And even if you are married, though sometimes the mere act of being married makes you the father whether you really are or are not.

This makes no sense. Splitting the costs of raising a child doesn't leave either parent better off financially than if they hadn't had the child.

It also does a tremendous disservice to the kids, who grow up not knowing who their real father is. I've heard of cases where kids grow up with someone they believe is their father, only to find out they've been lied to all their lives.

This is a well thought out video. Admonishing men to be responsible when it comes to birth control is actually a good first step for setting the bar higher for male role models for fatherless children. (At least it gets the idea of being mindful and responsible with your actions out there.)

Now, as far as DNA testing goes: sure, it should be available to those whom child support as been imposed upon. However, it shouldn't be mandatory. There may be some people who would actually like to be a Dad to the kids even if they are not the father.

A man who raises a child in a parent-child relationship is the child's "real" father, regardless of genetics.

I suppose it depends on the country ?
In Brazil, parents only split the cost if they earn about the same. If one of them is much better off financially then he/she gets to pay much more which can lead to cases where one is paying 100% of the costs. Considering there is no requirement to explain where every single penny is being spent, one can effectively cut down on the child's expenses and redirect that money towards their own pockets.

By "split," I didn't mean "split equally."

Child support arrangements are generally based on each parent's ability to pay. If one parent pays a relatively small amount, it's because she's not well off relative to the other parent

If a woman wanted to enrich herself and had a significant amount of free time - e.g. the amount of time that raising a child requires - she'd be much better off going to school part-time to get another diploma or degree to allow her to get a better job.

Depends. You can enlist your children in a lot of activities ( through child support ) in a way that you only get to see them at the end of the day thus leaving you with plenty of free time. Plus, if you get like 10 thousand dollars for month and get to redirect 1 thousand to your pocket, you are already earning much more than the average guy ( in Brazil ).

Personally, I think that there is a not inconsiderable measure of conflict inherent to the idea that biological parenthood should necessarily coincide with financial responsibility and actual parenthood.

I know for a fact that they are three entirely different, often all-out conflicting things.

As it turns out, I was also once subjected to a biological parenthood claim. The DNA test clarified matters and exempted me, but that sure gave me some food for thought.

Somehow it just doesn't make much sense to decide whether I am responsible for my sexual behavior solely on the basis of whether there was a pregnancy. Or to put it another way, it is not always or necessarily fair for the woman and child to saddle them with a permanent relationship with a man who has to be pressured by law into wanting to be a part of their lives.

And, of course, there are definitely fraudulent claims and manipulative pregnancies.

All in all, well meaning as financial child support laws can be, they are IMO just too flawed and incomplete to be worth keeping for much longer. I for one long for the eventual establishment of more difuse and merit-oriented models of parenthood.

You aren't a parent, are you?

How many people receive child support payments that are ten times "much more than the average guy" earns?

I am not, but I have seen ( married ) parents doing that. So ?

Few! There are around 75.000 people on this country that would be able to reasonably pay that much in child support.

For child support? Yes. For normal families? No

This case seems more like roll in dirt expect to get dirty. The guy seemed more pissed that he slept with a whore thus made him look bad than anything else. The commenter seems to be ignoring the "not the father's" own conduct.

    Do not sleep with crazy.

This is, ahem, an argument for the old fashioned sexual morality that sex occurred only inside the marriage bond. It would reduce not eliminate the problem, people being people.
