There seems to be a fair few people here with a negative view of sex, or certain sexual activities, or masturbation, or certain sexual orientations, or gender identities ...

And I just want to say sex is ok, you're ok, it's all ok!
Down with shame and all that stuff; up with happy, consensual sexy stuff.

I wonder how it happens that so few seem
    to have a normal attitude?

If there's so few that would have the attitude that you describe, then it wouldn't be "normal," would it?

    I would say:

    1. Religious influence, as some religions dictate how holy people view sex and certain sexual practices.

    2. Prejudice against what isnt the norm according to what society says.

    3. Fear that they themselves might be interested in engaging in activities which they see as taboo and thus they have a stronger stance against these things to compensate for their guilt.

    4. Personal experience and other peoples experiences tell them that a certain practice is detrimental.

    5. Reading up on certain practices with the research suggesting that certain practices are detrimental.

I agree, although I can see where the negative views come from. In much of my family (both immediate and extended families), sex was something that we just didn't discuss. It wasn't that they thought sex was bad, but they only felt it was good between married couples - and only privately. They didn't like it on TV or paraded out in public. I guess you could say they were prudes, with rather provincial, Bible-Belt oriented views. I suppose that might give one the impression that sex is something "dirty" and should be kept hidden from sight at all costs. And you don't want to be showing any skin either. That was also a big no-no.

No cussing, no rock-and-roll - and only wholesome family entertainment allowed. I had an uncle who didn't let his kids watch the TV show M*A*S*H, along with a few others. It was kind of difficult to restrict things in the 70s when popular entertainment was getting more daring and racy - pushing the boundaries which were previously in place. Back in the 50s, everyone slept in twin beds, and they never even went to the bathroom! Nobody had sex either; babies were brought in by the stork. Ah, those were the days.

When I got 'the talk', I was shocked. Why would anyone want to do *that* with the 'dirtiest parts of the body' and with someone you *care for*????

Needless to say, my views have changed......

I was raised on a farm so sex was just an everyday, natural thing. All the animals were at it and my mom and dad were products of the 60 free love era.

So by the time it was my turn i had pretty much seen enough. Boring and uninteresting... Until i met the right guy.

Individual choice. Asexual, heterosexual, different orientation, all OK. For the heterosexual majority in Hinduism, sex is 'dharma', one of the four things that a person should engage in (Purushartha). Did I not promise to my wife that we will seek pleasure in each other?

Dhruva Dhyaanam Darshanam Va (meditating on the Pole star and the Arundhati star)

The Pole Star is stationary and fixed in its position, likewise the couple is expected to be steadfast and firm in fulfilling their vows and responsibilities.

    The bride:
Just as the star Arundhati (Star Alcor in Great Bear constellation) is attached to the star Vasishtha (Star Mizar), so may I be ever firmly attached to my husband!

Placing his hand upon the bride’s forehead, the bridegroom:
As the heavens are permanently stable, as the earth is permanently stable, as these mountains are permanently stable, and as the entire universe is permanent stable, so may my wife be permanently settled in our family! - Rig Veda X.173.4

(Addressing the bride): You are the Pole star; I see in you stability and firmness. May you ever be steadfast in your affection for me. The great God has united you with me. May you live with me, blessed with children, for a hundred years!
