Admittedly I checked several sources before I believed.
I'm still suspicious. That is VERY unRepublican like. Not just the race issues, but the work issues in that it's anything that adds another holiday and gives people another day off. It's not normal for Conservatives.
Maybe I'm too cynical, but I think maybe they're playing politics with something.

Do you really think someone is stupid enough to go out as the person being against recognizing the end of slavery as a national holiday? That's political suicide. Even the most hardcore racist idiot would know not to go against such a proposal publicly. You might as well have American politicians saying they dislike America and thinks Canada is way better in a serious manner.

On another note, considering how slavery shaped profoundly the shape of your country, its good to have make it's abolition during a bloody civil war a national holyday.

As I pointed out, they have another angle to be against it without even mentioning race. On those grounds, yes, I see some of them being an arseling and saying no.
I can also see potential Dem opposition because it would be a federal holiday. That means a lot of white people and not that many black people will get the day off.

If they keep adding holidays then all they have to do is keep the number of paid holidays the same, and then federal workers will can choose which holidays to get paid for. Fact is almost nobody with a real (work at will, temp, delivery, transportation, supply, retail etc) job is going to get a holiday out of it.

The medical field would also have lots who get the day off.
That too is another field that doesn't have many black people in it.
And office workers who scheduled their black employees (and everybody else) in on the day.
So, yes, I would be surprised if there isn't some dissent among some of the Dems over it being a federal, rather than national, holiday.

It does seem quintessential American at this point, that of course the end of slavery and black freedom from it will be celebrated by making it a type of holiday that black people generally will not get off and thus having to work while the white office people making them work won't be in for the day. Because they can optionally take off give off a federal holiday or not.

We have commemorated Juneteenth with an annual festival since 1997. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that enslaved people were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s emancipation proclamation which had become official on January 1, 1863. To mark the anniversary of their liberation and honor the two additional years of slave labor endured by enslaved people in Texas, our ancestors celebrated Juneteenth. Many African Americans celebrated and continue to celebrate Juneteenth in the same way that white Americans generally celebrate the Fourth of July.
