Russians fire upon Ukrainian ships in Kerch Strait near Black Sea

It looks like things are heating up between Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian president wants to declare martial law in Ukraine:

On Sunday morning, Russia prevented three Ukrainian ships from entering the Kerch Strait, a narrow strip of water linking the Azov and Black seas. According to the Ukrainian navy, vessels belonging to Russia’s border service opened fire on the Ukrainian fleet, injuring six sailors, before seizing two of the ships.

Moscow had prevented the ships from entering the strait by placing a large cargo vessel beneath a Russian-controlled bridge. Russia then closed the strait, which both nations use.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko endorsed the military cabinet’s proposal, rushed through in Kiev well past midnight, to install martial law across the country for 60 days. On Monday, the vote will be put before parliament and is expected to sail through.

Britain calls it an act of aggression: The Latest: Former Ukraine presidents warn over martial law

Britain is accusing Russia of an "act of aggression" in seizing Ukrainian vessels and sailors near Russian-occupied Crimea.

Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman, James Slack, says the incident is "further evidence of Russia's destabilizing behavior in the region and its ongoing violation of Ukrainian territorial integrity."

He says "Russia must not be allowed to use force to exert greater pressure on Ukraine." Britain is urging all parties to show restraint.

The Ukrainian navy says six sailors were wounded when Russian coast guards opened fire on three Ukrainian ships near the Kerch Strait — the only outlet for Ukrainian vessels to the Black Sea — and then seized them. Ukraine is demanding the release of the ships and crewmen.

One error here in this article is that the Kerch Strait is not "the only outlet for Ukrainian vessels to the Black Sea." Ukraine has other ports, notably Odessa which is on the Black Sea itself, which does not require passage through the Kerch Strait.

This can get ugly. Ukraine is pretty much on her own with this one. While NATO might speak loudly, they are not going to intervene against Russia.

And they’ll probably continue to play their power games until the rest of the world plucks up enough courage to stand up to Putin and his thugs

I would prefer to exercise every possible idea before escalation. No one wants that.

Putin knows this hence why he gets away with it. No major players wants a war with Russia and few are capable of fighting said war.

WWMRD?
Kiev claims it followed protocol while Russia says they never received the message, there are rules to this.
What would the Ukraine gain from this?
What would Russia gain from this?

I find that it's a bit fishy that martial law in Ukraine would suspend a presidential election.
I also tend to default towards Russia in situations like these, probably as a result of my fondness for it.
I'll admit that that's highly illogical, but what can ya' do?:)
Why is Russia doing this?

Meanwhile whilst everyone talks, Putin and his power hungry thugs carry on regardless, isn’t that what’s been happening in Syira

To start with. Arm the UN which at present is a powerless political dinosaur that has no teeth.
Yes and who would lead such a coalition? Train them? Every nation has a very unique way they handle their armed forces. Each with a different strategy, focus, budget, language, culture, and size. While you may have optimistic outlooks on organizing such a thing, I do not.

Secondly consequences for aggression.
Such as?

Awful idea considering one of the goals of the UN was to avoid heavy military conflicts. The security council, which Russia is part of, would just veto any action against their own nation and allies thus becoming another political tool. The rabble in the general assembly would try to use it against their own enemies. The OIC would probably try use it against their enemies as their own military forces are incapable and/or incompetent. The UN isn't a joke because it lacks a military. It is a joke because of the membership and it's own internal politics.
