Ron Paul: President Obama Is Not A Socialist | TPMDC

Near the end of the third day of this year's Southern Republican Leadership Conference, it was time for Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) to take the stage. Paul, fresh off his victory in the CPAC straw poll, gave a characteristically fired-up speech that took on the views of the Republican party establishment.

"The question has been raised about whether or not our president is a socialist," Paul said. "I am sure there are some people here who believe it. But in the technical sense, in the economic definition of a what a socialist is, no, he's not a socialist."
"He's a corporatist," Paul continued. "And unfortunately we have corporatists inside the Republican party and that means you take care of corporations and corporations take over and run the country."

Paul said examples of President Obama's "corporatism" were evident in the heath care reform bill he signed into law last month. He said the mandate in the bill put the power over health care in the hands of corporations rather than private citizens. But he said the bill wasn't the only place where corporatism is creeping into Washington.
"We see it in the financial institutions, we see it in the military-industrial complex," he said. "And now we see it in the medical-industrial complex."

Despite his opposition to the bill, and despite Republican calls to repeal it, Paul said that when it comes to the landmark health care bill, "throwing it all out is probably not going to happen."

He said the only hope Republicans have is to change the bill for the better. Paul said he will introduce his own legislative fix when the Congress returns from recess next week.

"There's one piece of legislation that I'm going to introduce, it's going to be one page long," he said. "It will be to remove the mandate so you don't have to participate if you don't want to."

His speech, which touched on his oft-repeated calls to close down American military bases overseas and shift toward libertarian-style social policy, drew cheers from the Paul fans in the crowd and what sounded like boos from others in the room.

Any thoughts?

obama isnt a socialist. anyone who knows anything about socialism, and is honest will recognize this. of course, i wished he was.

ron paul is a man to be respected, even if not completely agreed with. tho i do agree with him on some things however, drugs, military, & war.

Why do you think it is that so many people have Obama confused as a socialist (like they were even close at all)?

because people dont know what socialism is. they (those primarily on the right) dont know because the right has an inherent disdain for "book learnin" and have been lied to their entire lives by those who lead them. and why go through the trouble of lying to people about what socialism is, if your not gonna paint your enemies as such?

The "spread the wealth" portion of his campaign has people's visions clouded so they fail to see his involvement with these corporations. I really wish Ron Paul would have stayed in the running. Him and Sarah Palin would be an awesome team. :)

Big Pharma has won big time with the health care reform. Now they can also do away with generic meds and buying from Canada! More power to the Government and profits to Corporations.

You take that back! Ron Paul would NEVER dare to associate himself with Palin, he's the closest thing to a decent Republican there is (not that that's saying much)! ... Least I hope he doesn't... no one in 2004 would have expected McCain to go the way he did in the 2008 election either, I guess. I expect that as a Republican, Ron Paul will either fall out of power, or have to pander to the religious right as McCain did, or if we're lucky, leave the party and run as a libertarian again.

Anyways, as to the OP, good for Paul, he's that much more respectable now. Too bad he believes in capitalism and associates himself with Republicans.

And I still find it odd that you would support politicians who are well known for their ani-gay and anti-women stances.
Would it be better if I supported those that support baby-killing and who bombed the moon, a symbol of my religion? Can't agree with everything someone else believes in. If anyone claims to then they are just being a suck-up. Let's not derail the thread though. This thread is more about Ron Paul's opinion of Barack Hussein Obama, not about my affiliation with non-Democratic parties.

Er, just out of curiosity... who the hell supports bombing the moon?!? That sounds like a Lyndon LaRouche idea, from the sound of it...
Also, many (too many) democrats are pro-life.

But seriously, if those are your only grievances with the Democratic Party, you'd probably be more fulfilled trying to change that party than trying to get the Republicans to accept your rights. Democrats aren't as rigid as the Republicans (which is the only reason why the Republicans still stand a chance at elections).

Or, why can't you just vote libertarian, if you want to have your rights and not have your religious symbols desecrated?

(Also, why do only people who hate Obama use his full name? Do they think the name "Hussein" demonizes him or something?)

They're bumpkins who don't realize that "Hussein" is a pretty common name, much like "Smith".

LOL. When I'm referring to George W. Bush, I use Bush. If there is some confusion between the two, I use W.

Just shorthand.. no reason to reiterate the full name. You just need to know who I am referring to.
