Right to Work States

Warren Clark

Informer
Hello friends.
So I just recently moved to Florida which is a right to work state as opposed to my home state Michigan.

I am just getting adjusted to it.

Right now I am working at Walmart. (I hate the monster.)

So I went in for work and I had just dyed my hair pink.
My manager tells me that I need to go home and come back with more conservative hair.

I will make two points.

1.) The definition of conservative.
2.) Discrimination.

1.) How do you determine if something is conservative?
Many years ago it was thought wearing a big hair wig conservative.
Then they said long hair was not conservative.
Or you had to oil your hair to look conservative.
Today conservative might as well be not having shaved words in your head.

2.) Discrimination.
Now I understand the business perspective and all that.
On a side note, pink hair would attract customers not deter them.

There was a women that worked at walmart and they tried firing her for her extra long nails but they couldnt because they cant enforce personal hygiene .

So this is running through my head. What if I went and fired people who got fat or pregnant. So you are going to fire people with colored hair?

Its bs....

So as of now, i am buying a conservative style wig. If it doesn't satisfy I have a lawyer for back up.

People may say "its a right to work state".
I say the only way laws are changed is when people fight them.

Even in right to work states, employers may control your appearance & conduct on the job.

Holy smokes.
You are all over the place in that post.
What is your point?
I am having trouble figuring it out.

I'll translate:
I want Wall Mart to pay me, but I want them to change the company to meet my personal standards.
And I want the government to do that for me.

Hi Warren Clark!

I understand the principle that you're trying to defend. I think it would be great if we lived in one of those societies described by Robert Heinlein where everyone was totally free to express themselves.

I don't think the issues that you mentioned are the ones that we (or you) should be concentrating on right now. The fact that you are working at a company with a long history of low wages, poor benefits, a slew of worker's rights lawsuits and an extremely antagonistic stance to collective bargaining should be of much more concern to you.

Also, considering the current economic conditions, I would be happy that I found a job (even at Wal-Mart). Then I would un-pink my hair and work on a strategy for finding some type of employment with a future. Once everyone has a liveable wage and access to health care, we can worry about the right to have pink hair. Sorry if this sounds a little harsh.:flower: I am as liberal as they come, but this is exactly the kind of (dare I say it?) nonsense that people like Reverend Rick and Kathryn love to bash progressives with. And they would be right to.

Peace and blessings,

You are indeed a rare bird! (That's a good thing.)

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

Thanks....I think. With "enemies" like you, who needs friends? ;)

I don't love to bash anyone. I just calls it like I sees it.'

Some days I wish I could wear shorts and my favorite T shirt advertising Coon *** Beer to work - especially on Fridays. My meanie bosses would make me go home and change - they would probably even write me up for it!

Okay....
On the one hand we are in a country of personal freedom....
which is disappearing day by day.

And pink hair is an issue?

Maybe in China?

That is exactly how I feel about this issue. Getting a job is tough enough, the last thing I'd worry about is the right for physical self expression in a job that is hardly enough to make a living on full time.

So much for freedom.

It's an issue for Wallmart....& they are the employer who would hire this guy to work on their behalf. If he doesn't like their terms, then he can work elsewhere or
start his own business. Freedom also means not forcing people to tolerate any & every behavior/dress/tattoo/piercing/language that some worker might sport.

Unfortunately our notions of freedom are polluted by capitalism.
Were I you, I'd take a look at where freedom is most in danger. You'll find that government (especially the socialist ones) is a pretty bad actor...far worse than
us capitalist running dogs. You've never been subject to the military draft during wartime. You get no choice about that line of work, & you don't get to flaunt
pink hair, dress as you please, refuse to kill people, keep your own hours, etc. etc. You young whippersnappers think you have it so rough...there have been
far worse abridgements of liberty which we've finally jettisoned. But government is always tempted to bring them back. (Only recently, some Dems were
proposing bringing back the draft.....in the name of fairness of all things.)

But one day people will not enslave themselves to property, a man-made invention.
Don't hold yer breath.

I'm sorry but all companies have certain dress codes and images they want their staff to follow. If the employee isn't willing to do this then they can leave.

Again...so much for freedom.

It may interest the discussion....our founding fathers had serious reservations about the 'system' they would leave to this country.

Chasing after money....and taxes...was one of the reasons they left Europe.

Now there is nowhere to run to.

Anyone seen recent documentaries about how China operates?

Where do you think this is going?

Really?
You mean they are not free to chose another job?

Or do you perhaps think that "freedom" means you have the right to do whatever you want, when ever you want and not have to suffer any consequences for your actions?

Yeah, we come here naked and we don't take anything with us when we leave.

But most people don't look good naked - and personally I don't want to lay around naked on a pile of leaves scrapping around in the briars for some berries or grubs to eat.

Property comes in mighty handy.

Exactly.

I worked for one HVAC service company here that demanded military-acceptable hair cuts, clean shaven employees, and clean uniforms with the shirt tails tucked in. Failure to follow those rules were grounds for termination.

I absolutely hated it (I'm a big fan of facial hair and keep a full beard), but they gave me an employee handbook which listed all of the rules and I accepted the job. And that means I agreed to follow all their rules, even if I disagreed with them.

It was my choice. I could have always said "no thanks" and walked out the door.

I used my time there to learn my trade and then went to work for a company that is much more responsive to their employees and uses discretion in those types of decisions.

The red highlight would be correct.
The choice is inhibited by prejudice.

You really think it matters what the next guy looks like?

Do whatever I want?....and the only restriction would be what?
