Richard Stallman was the founder and president of the Free Software Foundation. He is an activist against government surveillance of citizens. He personally starts the GNU software movement which now forms the core of Linux and many other OS's. His is code and his name are all over the place. He coins the term 'Copyleft', and he is he original author of Emacs.

Apparently he is mischaracterized in media currently as a defender of Epstein, and he's been asked to resign. So much for loyalty. There is no such thing with corporate entities. They shed bodies like skin cells.

I think his resignation is a good thing - he has a long troubling history talking about pedophelia, once claiming on his blog in 2003 that he didn't believe "voluntary pedophelia" was necessarily a bad thing. Similarly, in many other posts on his blog he has done similar things in discussions on statutory rape, as he once tried to defend a Homeland security officer having ""consensual"" sex with a 14 year old.

In addition to the recent allegations made by women learning/working at MIT about him (not anything like sexual assault, but definitely harassment and creepy behaviour towards women, consistent with his blog posts,) I think it's more than reasonable for the FSF and MIT to not want him at the reigns. He's contributed good things to software but that doesn't excuse his defficiencies. I see this as a result in the trend of uprooting sexism and toxic-male culture in comsci and nothing more.

The daily beast and vice have both reported on it but have seriously distorted what Stallman has said. What he says is bad and he should be criticized for but nonetheless it should be reported correctly.

The person who leaked the emails triggering his resignation made a series of blog posts on medium focusing on Stallman and how he has contributed to a toxic culture at MIT. They note Stallman is not the only MIT prof generating this environment though.

Richard's statement is available on his personal blog, but he doesn't go to any details other than asserting that he has been misunderstood and misinterpreted.
FSF has a statement of his resignation, but it is similarly devoid of anything relating to his poor comments.
