Given the strength of feeling that would emerge if we tried to ban the Abrahamic religions, I would propose setting up some form of global inter-faith assembly where the leaders of the three Abrahamic religions and their various schisms sit down and have to agree to remove everything in the texts which teaches any form of
    1/ hatred
    2/ social divisiveness
3/ violence to another person in any form and for whatever reason
4 feelings of religious/spiritual superiority and ownership of God
    5/ Intolerance of any kind

These leaders will have to accept that they have a duty of care in allowing teachings that contain any of the above and must therefore take personal responsibility for any future use of these teachings. if they refuse to remove the teachings from the text then they should be put on trial, together with any person who in future uses the texts to spray bullets in schools, blow up innocents etc etc

We are currently facing extreme violence in the world, which has its roots in the teachings of the Abrahamic religions . There is a growing rise in fundamentalism on all sides. If we do not deal with the issues at their root, they will continue to grow and poison the minds of future generations. Whilst of course this approach will be met with cries of protest at the desecration of the holy books, I personally think it is more important to save lives than treasure hateful and divisive texts,
It cannot be free speech etc if it causes violence to another , a price has been paid.

This is my viewpoint. I would like to hear yours. Bear in mind that there might be now right now some young kid reading verses on why he should slay the non-believer, stone the blasphemer etc. The Bible and the Koran radicalizes in the wrong hands, with the wrong teachers. Why allow the ones that do the material to do that?

If you disagree why? if you agree, how could such an event be implemented?

I see it as happening naturally through liberalism, whereby each religion’s adherents cherry pick the good scriptures which are in line with humanistic virtues, and regard the rest of the verses as mythology from the understanding of more primitive human minds.

That way we don’t even need to erase or whitewash human history by deleting the controversial verses of religion.

Rationally, i would agree with you, but I imagine there will be the mother of all wars before the cherry picking began in earnest. Right now, any kid can be radicalized, or counter-radicalized , go into a school and kill your kids or mine, in the name of God. Why would we wait for common sense to possibly prevail, sometime in the future. This liberal approach hasn't helped much over the past 1000 years imo. and right now the extremes on all sides are gaining strength. A very dangerous time

Sorry, but this is a really, really bad idea.

It's unethical, it's ridiculously implausible, it rests on the crudest form of generalisation and misunderstanding of religious beliefs and also runs completely counter to a basic understanding of human psychology (How often do you revise your deeply emotionally held opinions simply because somebody demands you do in a smug, arrogant and patronising manner? People generally don't revise opinions based on deeply held emotions even when presented with overwhelming factual evidence that they are wrong, let alone when an outsider orders them to).

It also would contribute to most if not all of the 5 points you list so is hypocritical.

Anyway, when someone rejects a religion, they necessarily adopt an alternative worldview to replace it. Why should we be confident that the type of people who are predisposed to favour violent, millenarian religious beliefs, wouldn't also be predisposed to favour violent, millenarian non-religious ideologies?

Christ, mate. I know people who were literally ****ed over by “Christians” who aren’t as cynical of Abrahamic religions as you.
Which Christian peed in your cornflakes?

It is not healthy, for any culture, to pander to the lowest common denominator, so the inmates can run the asylum. Since math is hard for some people, do we need to get rid of all advanced math beyond addition and subtraction?

It makes more sense to give remedial help to those who lack the power of reason and self control. Those who can become provoked simply by reading or hearing a magic word, from a list, needs help. It is not about quarantining the healthy, so the unhealthy can wander free of provocation. The bible has stories about how this does not end well.

The snow flake generation has been lied too so manny times, by the Progressives, they have failed to develop a proper grounding in reality. Hypersensitivity is the flip side of overly aggressive. That two sided coin is what needs to be addressed.

The Muslim extremists place too much stock in words, also. The extremists will censor anything that might provoke the unstable in their ranks.. A healthy person can worship in their own way, while allowing others the same freedom, since God does not equal words. Words are only there to enhance understanding and convey information. They are not magic; false god.

    Problem is

All these things is human nature. Even non-religious people exhibit these qualities at the same rates as religious folk.

Perhaps we just need to speed up whatever is causing this:

Are Arabs turning their backs on religion?
Arab world turns its back on religion – and its ire on the US

And no doubt similar results could be seen for Christianity and other faiths elsewhere over the last several decades.

Now what could be causing all this?

All you need to do is sit tight and stop blaming outsiders for everything. Wolves arise from within. Whatever groups you are in, the wolves will arise. You can't excise them by correcting other people's ideas.

I think you are both missing a point here. People that are indoctrinated with negative biblical verse, believe they are acting for a higher power and that is a major threat to the fabric of world society. they do not feel a need to listen to anything but God and the verses they select are the ones that give fuel to and justify their actions

IMO It is unethical and dangerous to allow words of hate and violence that are purportedly from God to be read by half-formed minds. The most dangerous person in the world is the one that commits atrocities believing God is on their side.

Simple they should take the scriptures seriously, not themselves, however they do it the other way around and take themselves seriously and not the scriptures - hence, a ****-show.

What would make you think the laws of the prophets are 'God said'? Also how is text that ran the lives of many for thousands of years not historical

They contain elements of both history and fiction. They are not reliable account and if you are arguing that there is no "God Said" in the Bible etc then re-read it . Then of course there is God appeared and God did this and that etc
