From Rick Scott warns 'woke' businesses about a 'day of reckoning'

"the Florida governor's rhetoric was mild compared to the open letter his predecessor, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), published on Fox Business' website a day later.

"The senator's rather creepy letter, directed at "Woke Corporate America," mocked executives for criticizing voter-suppression measures, derided their "elitist friends," accused them of "supporting" violent activists, insisted that they're "lying" about Georgia's perfectly reasonable voter-suppression law, and derided their "moral inferiority."

"At times Scott's open letter bordered on hysterical, lashing out at businesses that "feed the rabble leftist mob," and work alongside the "liberal corporate news media" that is "just as dishonest" as private-sector executives. He also condemned President Joe Biden, insisting he "demonstrates how to lie in public and get away with it."

"It was around this point at which the senator's statement took an even darker turn, sounding a bit like a two-dimensional villain from a poorly written action movie:

"Let me give you woke corporate leaders a heads-up: Everybody can see the game you are playing. Everybody can see your lies. You are the naked emperor.... And here is another bit of news for you: There is a massive backlash coming. You will rue the day when it hits you. That day is November 8, 2022. That is the day Republicans will take back the Senate and the House. It will be a day of reckoning."

And what, pray tell, will happen if there's a GOP Congress? According to Rick Scott, Republicans will "make corporate welfare a thing of the past. There will be no number of well-connected lobbyists you can hire to save you. There will be no amount of donations you can make that will save you. There will be nowhere for you to hide.
"

Mixture of truth. He sounds a little eccentric, but maybe it will work out for him. President Biden does demonstrate how easy it is to lie and get away with it, because he's constantly called out on his position flipping. Nevertheless I don't think any Republicans have the moral ground to criticize him on it.

I think I saw a headline about how the threat is to prevent corporations worth 1 billion $ or more from any further mergers. Whatever this governor thinks about progressives, Democrats etc. this sounds to me like a brilliant idea. Corporations are too big.

it's the real cancel culture that can't stand corporations being people unless they are 100% politically correct in support of the right.

Otherwise they'd never have joined the left in decrying corporate welfare.
Yes. Half justice is no justice.

If I thought that were true, I'd vote republican!

But of course it's idiotic gibberish. Both parties are whores for their corporate overlords. The republicans most of all.

That sounds pretty socialist to me. What do you guys think?

I think it's self-destructive. This is an incredibly poor approach to this phenomenon of large corporations siding against anti-voter legislation. The Republicans are basically forcing any big business in any state attempting to enact such legislation to side against them. As the article states, these businesses are testing the direction the wind is blowing and seem to feel that it is in their own best interest to reject the Republican's antidemocratic efforts. They seem to see inaction as risky.

What state wants to be next? Maybe Texas can pass some anti-voting legislation and have AT&T, Dell, and American Airlines rebuke them.

How about Tennessee? Fed-Ex is headquartered there.

It also sounds illegal. This is clearly retribution, like Biden's sanction of Russia. I don't believe that the Constitution permits government to punish businesses for their political expression given Citizens United.

But what I like about it is that it will drive swing voters to the Democrats. About 40% will reliably vote Democratic, and another 40% Republican. It's the other 20% that determine the outcome to fair elections. I can't see anybody that's not a scorched earth Republican supporter - people who simply wants to lash out at others and hurt them and have no other desire in the world even if it cost them in the process - supporting such actions.

Oh, and keep attacking Major League Baseball, Republicans. People hate baseball as much as mom and apple pie.

I daresay that it seems you see corporations as people.
What next....you might start praising the joys of profit?

I'm glad I don't live in FL.
There are too many Donald Trump's there.

That's the vast majority of politicians. Politicians are a great source to learn from if you need to learn how to improve something like job interview skills. This includes over inflating truths, dancing around questions, being highly selective in what is presented, and even outright lies.

Sounds like it. The Democrats have already been pro-corporate for decades, but are the Republicans turning away from their pro-corporate, pro-capitalist viewpoint? That might be a good way to get more working class voters in the GOP camp.

What this reads to me is that any sort of anti-corporate stance - be it performative or genuine - would be punished so severely as to be political suicide. That does not lead to optimism that any demands of corporate regulation or social security have a meaningful chance to be realized in legislation.

I wouldn't be alone in a room with our recent presidents, however I understand what you mean. Certainly a lot of our most responsible political candidates have given up hope of leading honest lives. Unfortunately they believe it is required, and I don't know who is convincing them of it. I hope it isn't me.

Bernie was not a position flipper, so the party wouldn't accept him. President Biden obtained his position by being a position flipper, and he could not have become president of the Democrat party any other way, Bernie being the obvious evidence twice in a row.

Their job is literally to make promises they know they can't keep so they can get elected to office, after running campaigns they often only win with the support of corporate donors whom they then have to please in order to continue being able to run campaigns.
How would you expect people to not turn dishonest after a while in a job like that?

I don't really see corporations as people. SCOTUS does and if they are people, then certain rights and penalties apply.

As to profit - my wife ran a very small business for years and we rejoiced when she made money. We also paid taxes on that profit. Big corporations which pay no taxes and exercise much too much power are another matter.

I like how the left only recently discovered that corporations
have some (not all) of the rights of people. Everyone else
has known it for centuries.

In my democratic socialist friendly opinion, any non-citizen with a permit to work in the U.S.should have voting rights, because I'd like all workers to have a political voice regarding how productive members of our society should be governed. I would also like voting rights for felons convicted of 2nd or 3rd degree felonious offenses, because I'd like them to have a political voice regarding how our legal system and criminal justice system should be reformed. Furthermore, I'd favor a Constitutional change in order to allow 16 year olds and 17 year olds to vote, because most of them understand and appreciate the virtues of socialism. Regarding the taxation of wealthy companies or profitable corporations, I'd like them to pay a 2 percent corporate wealth growth tax as well as a higher income tax rate of 28 percent in order to fund the needed improvements of our nation's infrastructure.

I am referring to presidents on down to municipal officials. Some of these positions they don't even make promises they can't keep (meaning it's not in the job description inherently for any of them) because they run uncontested.
