Remember when I jokingly said we should give Canada the statue of liberty? Umm....

WEF Global Social Mobility Report: The American Dream is easier to achieve in Canada - CNN

Looks like our little brother nation is growing up to take the lead.

But please stave off the socialism...

What they don't tell you is half of Ontario at least is townhouses. Lots and lots and lots of them everywhere.

I'm not sure what they mean by American dream though. I thought I knew what it was until I discovered the generation of the forties created it all as a Ponzi scheme.

Still I have to agree with the article. Based on all the time I've spent in Canada, I would say people are generally happier across the border than here in the US. Albiet at a lot poorer than we are. The taxes in Canada are downright crushing.

    I guess money isn't everything.

I'm wondering if this is all a facade. A socialist honeymoon is going on in Canada gussied up as a Renaissance. That's just my opinion though.

    What's yours?

That a certain type of American will keep singing the Titanic's praises right up to the point they're actually in the icy water, and possibly a few minutes after.

What you call "socialism" and which you already widely accept, I merely call "reality". There are many things that government can do better than private enterprise. From the start we had a "socialistic" army and navy. We have always had "socialistic" law enforcement. "Socialistic" roads (well early on there were many private ones and that became a bit of a mess. Canada realized long before that we did that the government could do a better job at taking seeing to the medical care of their population than private industry can.

They still have countless independent businesses. The government does not intrude any further into their private lives than ours does. You rant about "socialism" but have a rather poor understanding of what you are fighting against.

Canada is a very nice place to live. Living standards are excellent, personnal freedom great, social security fairly good and the peeps not so bad. Our current leaders are a bit bleh, but largely inoffensive for the most part. You need a good winter coat and a love of hockey might help you make friends.

Socialism = anything but the attitude that the poor are losers and deserve to lose because they're inferior by nature.

I suppose that 'poor understanding' would include Venezuelans and Chinese so far who have been trying hard to educate and warn
the ignorant left who keep denying its socialism and pretend it's something else.

‘Damn socialism, why are you chasing me?’ Chinese-Americans see ghost of communism in Democrats’ leftward turn

US liberals embrace socialist policies destroying my home, Venezuela

Of course, the people in those those links obviously don't know nothing about socialism than the effects it has. Yours is a 'good' socialism*.

Yep, your poor understanding does include them. Think about it. What is the difference between them and Denmark for example?

Well, I do have reason to think their perceptions of socialism are a bit off. The person in the first link believes that legalized abortion is socialism.

And even as they sit on the ocean floor, they wouldn't take responsibility for their errors. "The atheists/liberals/socialists/communists/deep-state/freemasons/illuminati/jews/etc. maneuvered that iceberg into our path!"

So what accounts for their success if not their system?

The "American Dream" is the actual facade here. A lot of people can see through a lot of that propaganda, and that's why there appears to be growing support for varying degrees of socialism.

And the only reason socialism has ever gained any traction at all is due to capitalists behaving badly. If not for that, very few people would support socialism.

So, for those of you who have an extreme aversion to any form of socialism, your best bet to avoid it would be to encourage and pressure capitalists to behave better.

FWIW, last time I was looking for work (so about 8 years ago now), I found that engineering jobs in the US paid a fair bit less than comparable jobs in Canada... and that's even before factoring in your ridiculous health care costs.

It would be relatively easy for me to get a job in the US (engineers are on the NAFTA list of professions, so the permit process is quick and straightforward) and there are plenty of American cities that are a reasonable distance from my family in Toronto, but I ended up sticking with Ontario mainly because I'd be worse off financially living in the US.
