The Norse Sagas and Eddas, and other texts were written in Old Norse, which is not much different than Modern Icelandic. I would say that to read the original Norse texts you'd learn Icelandic.

My religion? English is fine, although a far deeper understanding of it than is normal is ideal. That is to say, understanding its history, and the state of the language when regarding any given piece of written material.

This will also help with unveiling subtle mutual intelligibilities between English and the other Western Germanic languages, which can help when learning material in them.
