Religion column introduced in India citizenship application

It seems they are using it to check if refugees come from minority groups. I believe European countries (at least some of them) also prioritize taking minority groups as refugees as they have the worst of it.

It is somewhat worrying. Do they also ask for their favourite pop group and favourite colour?
Do you have a crafty enemy with whom you share a boundary of 3323 kms bent on creating disturbances in your country on the basis of religion, who is sending terrorists, drugs and fake currency for the last 45 years since its defeat in Bangladesh, and who indulges in cross border shelling on a daily basis. In addition we have more than 20 million illegal migrants from Bangladesh, many of whom have managed to get Indian identity papers by hook or crook. It was not there previously, the Supreme Court does not allow us to make any such distinction for Indian citizens. But this is a response to the current situation.

And do you think that someone who is intent on causing violence will answer honestly?

We have an intelligence department and at times are aided by US, UK, Israel intelligence and by other countries as well. We have been fairly successful in that.

All those people in the tech department can’t figure out which terrorist is lying in India? Hmm

We have upward of 180 million Muslims (India has the third largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia and Pakistan). It is like searching for a pin in a stack of fodder. There are thousands of potential candidates for Islamic terrorism and hundreds of 'sleeping cells' which help or are activated by Pakistani signals. It is a credit to Indian intelligence agencies that no big incident has happened in the recent years. IS has been able to get less than a hundred recruits from India whereas the number from European countries and Britain goes into thousands.

“Anyone applying for Indian citizenship will have to declare one’s religion henceforth. The Centre has made this mandatory through home ministry norms notified on the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2018, on October 18.”

OK.
But the day that a country has so many Bahais in it that they form a majority, then the Bahai government will certainly be interested in everybody's religion, both residents, visitors and immigrants.
Only Bahais will be able to vote in a Bahai country, or a Bahai World Order for that matter.

I’m a liberal I don’t believe in theocracy or that non-baha’is shouldn’t be allowed to elect government representatives

But it is a bit like putting a question that asks, "Are you carrying any bombs?"

Bombs have many ways to reach India with long borders not just with Pakistan but also Nepal and Bangladesh, and a long coast-line. Bombs can also be made from the material available locally (Ammonium Nitrate). Yeah, I do not think the question really fulfills any real purpose. Well, there are many things in India which do not have any purpose. The more important thing is to check what is the person's original citizenship or visa and why the person wants an Indian citizenship.

Indian census asks for religion caste etc. So the state has traditionally collected data about religion, ethnicity and caste identity from its citizens for a long time now. So it logically follows that new citizens would have their corresponding data logged as well.

Well, in my country all Bahais are registered as Bahais.
If you don't believe in World Orders such as Bahai World Orders, or the Bahais only voting system, then that's up to you.

PS: But in India it's probably very important for Home Security to know what religions various folks follow.

Religion and caste, but not ethnicity. The information is necessary to know the literacy status and socio-economic health of a community. When the citizenship is given, it is not conveyed to the Census organization. The person will automatically be counted in the next Census (now in 2021).
