Religion, Christianity and addiction

I point to Christianity because most religions in America are Christian but this is really for all religions in America. If church and religion is the answer why is there so much drug porn and alcohol addiction in America
right now?

Why are there so many Christians turning to porn sex addiction drug and alcohol? Again I point to Christians because most folks in America , at least half of us anyways are Christian, but it is directed at folks from other religions too. Why and what's the answer? Is Jesus the answer, or religion or some other religion?

All viewpoints are welcome.

People have addiction and dependency issues regardless of religion all around the world. It's a matter of genetics and environment. There's no reason to single out Christians. You might as well ask why some Christians have schizophrenia.

If you come from a culture that shames and/or blames a person for “giving into temptation” and does not stress mental health help, you could be holier than the Pope himself and potentially still find yourself suffering with addiction.

Oh no I agree that's why I said I am not singling out Christians. I speak to Christians because I speak to the USA. Most people here are Christians but I speak to other religions and ATheists and Agnostics as well.

True but do you think Americans are not worse in addictions then other countries?

Maybe, I don’t know. I’m not American. With all the horror stories I hear of your healthcare though, it honestly wouldn’t surprise me.

The Christian guidebook is the Bible, right?
What does the Bible say about drunkenness?
What does the Bible say about fornication?
Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

If they’re not striving to live by their guidebook, if they’re practicing these behaviors....is that Christ’s fault?.... Are they really following Christ?

What do you think?

So far, the 12 step group variations of addiction recovery are the most successful at helping people overcome an addiction. But even these are unsuccessful for a lot of addicts. Religious recovery groups exist, but they are few and far between, and they do not have as good a recovery rate as the Alcoholics Anonymous-type programs do.

All in all the prognosis for an addict of any variety is not good. And of those I know (I am a recovered alcoholic) that have successfully recovered, more than one 'program' was required. My early years of recovery involved me very actively in AA, in biweekly visits with a good psychologist, and with regular weekly meetings and chats with folks in a religious/Bible discussion group. And all three of these were needed, and helpful, for me.

Addiction is a very difficult disease to overcome, and those facing it may well need multiple methods of helping them do it. Keep in mind that the solution is 'whatever it takes', not 'which one is right'.

Thankyou for the insight.

How can we know that is true?

I believe people turn to addictions when they try to fill emptiness in them somehow. Or try to forget something. If Christians turn to addictions, it is probably because they have already rejected Bible God and the addiction consoles them, gives something else to think, in many cases.

I believe addictions have always some reason. And by my experience, many alcoholics seem to be maybe too sensitive and alcohol is one way to ease the pain that can comes, when one feels too much. In any case, I think Christian has not grown enough, if he is addicted to something. It would be good to get better self-knowledge and learn to know God better.

Japan consumes a horrendous amount of porn, and alcoholism and depression are rampant. European countries have their share of addiction too. I haven't looked at hard data, but I don't think the US is per capita any worse than other countries.
