Moscow-engineered referendums are taking place in four occupied regions of Ukraine, with results in favour of annexation seen as a foregone conclusion.

Kremlin eyes quick annexation of occupied Ukrainian regions

It looks like in order to avoid complete humiliation Russia is planning to leave with another four chunks of Ukraine. Holding elections in an occupied territory in a state of war is a joke. I wish justice for the Ukrainian people and justice on the leaders in Russia. And arsecancer on every supporter of Putin.

Have seen some reports the voting process is that some kindly soldiers approach you in the street or knock on your door to ask you what you want to vote for and then go to the trouble of noting it down for you. They even carry guns so that you feel safe from any thugs who would look to intimidate you to into voting for their preferred result.

Nice they are making voting so easy and accessible...

Russia did what the left has been wanting to do for themselves.

    It's called compulsory voting!

You like to make everything about "the left", even if it requires some zany mental gymnastics.

    Ummm...

I live in a country with compulsory voting. Whilst I realise you're attempting to make a joke, I think you're putting two and two together and getting about 0.5

    No thanks.

I live in a country with compulsory voting, and even though I don't support it, it doesn't look anything like that. Most countries around the world with compulsory voting have minimal sanctions for those that decide not to vote.

Well, even if you go to the polls, you can always turn in a blank ballot.

Compulsory voting in most countries that employ it is a far cry from what Russia is currently doing in Ukraine.

Please don't minimize the atrocity carried out by Putin's regime by comparing it to voting laws that don't threaten anyone's physical safety in the slightest.

Ok, fair play. I don't really want anyone to get cancer. If I'm really honest what I want is for them to experience the shame of knowing that they supported a tyranical psychopath and his kleptocrat regime.

I doubt it. Anything compulsory has the potential to take it a step further at any time.

Even if it seems harmless or minimal at first glance.

It's meaningless posing when he can't hold the territories he claims he's annexing. BUT, if it gives his ego a way to save face and get out, I'm ALL FOR IT! "Here's the deed to your pretend territories, and we'll throw in the Brooklyn Bridge for good measure! Now go on home and play the hero ... just get the hell out of here!"

Can they even know Putin is a tyrant if the state has a strangle-hold on media? I am not fully informed about Russian citizens access to non-state information, but I do recall a news piece in which a young woman who went to university in the west literally struggle the first few years to reconcile what she was exposed to in the west and what she had grown up learning and believing about her country and Putin up to that point. I think it ended up affecting her relationship with family members when she began to challenge state media positions.
