I've decided to start making a rangoli daily by my front door daily. I tried for my first time this morning(er, afternoon).

Its hard! I used rice flour. It was very hard to get straight lines and to not get powder speckled everywhere.

Any advice? Any technique, or is there an easier(yet obtainable for someone in the Midwestern US) material to work with?

Making Rangoli with rice flour is extremely hard. There is a special mix called 'kolamaavu' (Tamil) that is used for the purpose. You can youtube 'kolamaavu' or rather, I will youtube little later and add some links if I come across anything useful to you. By the way, even Rangoli White powder can be used. The kolamaavu and rangoli powder are all little coarse and also do not stick to the fingers, and thus they don't taint the floor also. Good luck with Rangoli. (Will add some links later).

I'm unable to find either kolam powder or rangoli powder where I am(ordering online will be impractical, if its something I want to do frequently). I did find one video that recommended mixing salt and rice flour. I experimented a little with that; that helped tremendously.

There are some really wonderful beginner designs; I expect its going to be fun learning to make them. :)
